My thoughts on the My Little Pony: A New Generation trailer · 5:00pm Aug 12th, 2021

  • Okay, the bit where the ponies of Maretime Bay think Izzy is like some Godzilla-level monster made me laugh. :rainbowlaugh:
  • I just love how Izzy is oblivious to the Earth ponies (expect Sunny, of course) being scared shitless of her. Guess she and Sunny must have had similar upbringings.
  • Wait a minute. Hitch is one of the ponies scared of Izzy? And yet he goes along with Sunny and Izzy's adventure? Then again, perhaps he'll be tasked with keeping an eye on them before inevitably having a change of heart.
  • The sun and moon can move on their own now. Somehow, I predicted this in Old Mare Luna.
  • Okay, I'm confused. Sunny wants to bring the races together and yet, like Izzy, she's spooked by the arrival of one of the Pegasus sisters. And Izzy saying "pegasi are bad news". I have questions. :rainbowhuh:
  • Why am I not surprised Equestria has its own version of Just Dance?

Wait a minute. This movie has a Just Dance sequence that's in its trailer. The Emoji Movie has a Just Dance sequence that's in its trailer. Does that mean it's...

Nope, no, not going down that train of thought. We don't know who the villain for this movie is while the trailer for The Emoji Movie showed Smiler acting evil. Therefore, there is no possible way this movie will be an Emoji Movie 2.0...

Right? Even though it would benefit me very greatly.

  • I think you'll find I'm average height.

Gah! That line is so corny! I can't tell if I love it ironically or unironically. :rainbowlaugh:

  • "cutest flying Pomeranian", my arse.
  • Glowing flying pegasi? Spoilers, movie trailer!

Oh, who am I kidding? We all know the magic is gonna come back somehow.

  • I dunno why but I feel like Queen Haven's gonna be the plot twist baddy. Well, either her or Phyllis (even though Phyllis doesn't appear in the trailer).

In summary, I still have mixed feelings about G5. On the one hand, it looks good and doesn't give anything away (except for maybe the ending but we already knew the magic is gonna come back) but on the other hand...It just reminds me of The Emoji Movie.

I don't know why it reminds me of the trailer for The Emoji Movie, it just does. Maybe it's the Just Prance sequence.

The only thing that really gets me is that the 3D ponies look a bit uncanny valley-ish to me. Other than that, it all looks pretty good. Netflix also has a good track record with animated movies, so I'm more hopeful than I probably would've been if it was someone else. Still cautious about it but... More optimistic than I have been.

One thing I still can't help but question is why Paramount couldn't release this movie directly to their Paramount+ streaming service instead of handing the rights of the project to Netflix. I mean, this would've been a big opportunity for them in every way.

Considering how much of a failing business Netflix is becoming anyway...well, I highly doubt having them distribute the project and being Hasbro's collaborators on the G5 series was the right call to begin with.

Didn't you ask this before? Can't remember when and where?

Anyway, I don't get it either. Accessibility, maybe?

5567528
Because then no one would watch it.

This is my reaction, honestly. I still doubt it'll be good, or ever be good enough for me to accept it as a genuine continuation of G4, and they all look a bit HORRIFYING... but hey. Might be fun one-off. Looks better than before, anyway. Even if Maretime Bay looks like Disneyland.

I'm honestly indifferent to the new character designs. Though it wouldn't hurt to admit the ones I do like are Izzy and Pipp.

That's likely not the reason. In fact, no one would likely watch a Netflix original more than something from a third party.

That's... well. Delusional.

Netflix is the heavyweight champ here. They have good original shows, and are a proven platform. Versus Paramount, who are scum-sucking bottom-feeders. Netflix has the objectively bigger and broader audience. It's a no-brainer.

What 5567557 said. Netflix is more mainstream.

Though, I feel like the only competition Netflix has is Disney+.

There are three problems with having Netflix be the distributor, though.

Number 1, with film companies cutting ties in favor of starting their own streaming services, all Netflix has is original content. What made them successful in the first place is that people would become members simply to see third party content more than original content by Netflix. Because of not having as much variety in content as they used to, they're basically a secretly struggling business that likely won't last forever. I wouldn't be surprised if Netflix was eventually bought by a film company too, with Universal being a likely candidate.

Number 2, the things they distribute or create aren't as widespread as people think. They rarely release their original content on home video or make them available on other services, which decreases the chances of their movies and shows being noticed. Not to mention they don't make as much money when only being available there. "The Little Prince" was lucky enough to ever be released on DVD and Blu-Ray because it was a co-production with Paramount, and they acquired the rights to release the film on home video and various other streaming services. Heck, I've been interested in seeing "Jurassic World: Camp Cretaceous" for as long as I can remember, but I refuse to become a member of Netflix to do so because they aren't providing anything else of interest.

Number 3, the prices for Netflix memberships are so high nowadays that people can hardly afford it. I don't remember the exact price, but they increased the membership fee to either $15 or $20. It's practically highway robbery!

Their original content is fantastic, on average, and draws people in.

Everyone already has Netflix, so you don't need to go anywhere else. Also, solid copies of things? Boomer.

Yeah. So why get another service that makes you pay about the same, when you can keep your price down by sticking with the service you already have? Sunk cost, my friend.

Their original content may draw you in, but they never drew me in. Not everything, at least. My family and I quit being members of Netflix because of all the reasons I stated. Heck, I actually heard that much of their content particularly promotes pedophilia.

Maybe I'll use Netflix again when the membership prices go down to a more reasonable price, but until then...I'm not renewing it even if my life depended on it.

Honestly, that's not true at all. Not everyone has Netflix.

Actually, I don't have Netflix (or any streaming service for that matter). I still go to the pound shop with my mum to buy DVDs.

Other than that, I agree with everything else you said.

Also, one other competitor to Netflix that I neglected to mention is Amazon Prime. Their original content is high-quality and I'm kinda surprised Hasbro wouldn't want My Little Pony: A New Generation to be available on there.
