    SMoTE Update

Next chapter isn't going to be uploaded this Friday. Sorry, I usually try to have three chapters prepared before posting but I got lazy and some personal things came up. I'll try to get them all ready quickly though. Thanks for your patience!

    Life Update.

    So…. Yeah.

Long story short, quite a few things happened. SMoTE is still not getting regular updates, at most I can try to squeeze a chapter out a month. This isn’t because I’m too busy with my new job or anything, because I apparently don’t have one.

So yeah, if you read my last blog post then you know I was planning to delay SMoTE updates because of some amazing job opportunities.

The Plaid Plagiarist. How Many Times Can He Plagiarize? · 6:35pm Jul 20th, 2021

It’s funny. Earlier this week, I posted a thread about plagiarists and how none have been caught recently. But, Lo and behold, I found one. Not just that, but he was a ban evader as well!

Before I go into any further detail, I want to make a note that you shouldn't seek out this user, even if you know who they are. They're gone now, permanently.

Anyway, let’s start off from the early days of May, before the Plaid Plagiarist posted a single story. He sent a PM to my alt account with a very… “Abrasive” tone.

Hi there I’m going to help you make more fanfic storys. And to let you know I’m a fnafic critic and reviewr

I replied with, what I thought was, a very appropriate response.

?

Simple and elegant, and it really captures just how little I cared but with a dash of personality for my alt's persona. It also perfectly shows my complete confusion, and is vague enough for him to either reply or ignore... He replied.

You have exalant storys I’m going to help you make more

I had one story on there, recently published, and it wasn't excellent or "Exalant" by any stretch of the word. I replied with a simple message.

?

He replied with a list.

Hear are some fanfic ideas you mite like to write. 1 scottish equestrian wher evrypony and evrthing is scottish. 2 levi ackerman a equestrian adventure and sword for hire. 3 the daughter of pharaynx and the gentleman assassin for hire. 4 unit 141 the guardians of equestrian. 5 the levi squad the immortal gardians of equestrian. Wich story idear do you like the best

At this point, I’m sure you’ve all noticed his… “Interesting” choice of words. Well, he had an excellent excuse. You see, the Plaid Plagiarist was Scottish, and that means they type differently. (This is actually true, apparently, so I don't think he was lying about being Scottish. Maybe he was, who knows.)

Scottish is English but with a accasant

This mite help you.
https://newsnet.scot/archive/a-history-of-scottish-languages/

So, I decided to have a little fun with it, replying with “genuine” (read sarcastic) interest and seeing what else he said. We went back and forth for around an hour of him trying to sell me story ideas to write, until I said I liked his idea of having Beavis and Butt-Head being Luna’s sons.

He tried to push me to write it, I said I wouldn't do that, and he eventually posted it himself. I felt good knowing that someone was actually trying to write a story for themselves. (How foolish I was.)

He posted "2 idiotic humans in equestria," the story of Luna's sons who were sent to the human world. Here’s the long description of the story.

Luna has just returned from the moon and is afusting to modern equestria.
The 1st thing she duse is asks her sister wher her sons are .

And here’s the first paragraph of chapter one.

It was another day in the town of Highland as the sun gently rose over the horizon. A yellow school bus pulled right up to the curb of the Highland museum of unnatural history, the bus doors slid open and out came a rather strange man who seemed to be stuck in a 60's time warp. Long blonde hair, glasses, small beard, purple shirt with a peace sign on it, okay he's a hippie do I have to keep describing him and what he's going to do?

Notice anything? Maybe the proper grammar, the accurate spelling, the more casual and fun conversational tone? How about the major lack of mistakes that littered the description or his Private Messages? Well, there was one BIG mistake, because he made the mistake of stealing. He posted this in April of 2021 and got away with it for months. I didn't catch it because... Well, I didn't read it.

The original story, Beavis and Butthead Do Equestria was written on Fanfiction.net by NocturneD. Remember this story, it’ll come back later.

So, he then posted “What if deathlok was in equestria.” (Yes, he spelled it that way.) Here’s the description,

Deathlok go’s to equestria they very drunk. And goodbye queen chrysalis

And here’s the first scene.

Luna was pacing back and forth in the evening light. Discord had told her that five humans would be here, but he never told anything beyond that. Were they dangerous? Were they even from where the two humans that were here two months ago, from? Are they male, female or a mix of the two?

Celestia noticed her sister's worries, and walked up to her. "Luna, what's wrong?"

"Two months ago, at that party, Discord told me that five more would be coming, but he never told me who."

"Five more humans?"

"Yes, Tia."

"Hmmm... Let me talk to him, okay."

"Very well sister."

And Celestia went go to find Discord. Are you lying Discord, or are you really telling the truth? And why the sudden change of heart?

Again, weird description, and a very poetic beginning. Well, that’s because he stole this too. It’s from DETHLOK in Equestria. Chapter one…

But that’s not all! The Plaid Plagiarist “wrote” another story. “Rick and morty a equestrian multverse adventures,” which was a copy and paste of Rick and Morty Do Equestria.

Twilight Sparkle was having a good day. She had gotten all her books fully arranged, Spike and Starlight were both accompanying Rarity to Canterlot for the weekend, and there was not a hint of anything going horribly, horribly wrong in Ponyville.

That last one should have been a massive red flag to her, but, well, hindsight's 20/20.
She had just started to fall back into a chair and crack open a copy of Magic, and How Not To Use It For Literally Everything Ever when a giant green disc opened above the ground in front of her, causing her to simultaneously yelp, fall backwards over the chair, and send the book flying across the room.

And here’s a snippet if what he stole. He stole everything from the original, but I'm not showing all of that. You get the idea.

The only thing he didn't steal was the italicization or page breaks.

At this point, his plagiarism was obvious, and he thought so too! Here’s an excerpt from “The lord protectors of equestria” which was about Levi from Attack on Titan helping Equestria.

The ponies watched in confusion and shock. The god of chaos rested his paw over his eyes to continue watching the changeling queen fly farther and farther out of the reaches of their sight. Until nothing was left, only the carnage left in Canterlot.

"Hmmm." Discord scratched his chin. "Probably should have used a golf club so I could have made a Tiger Woods reference."

"Uhhhhhh... Huh huh. You said woods." Butt-head pointed out.

"Yeah heh heh heh." Beavis chuckled. "But first he said tiger."

"Uhhh... I don't get it." Butt-head turned to his friend.

Hang on a tick, Beavis and Butthead? Since when were they in Attack on Titan? I mean, don't get me wrong, I'd pay money to see those two in any anime, but I'm pretty sure they aren't.... Oh, wait, this is Chapter 27 of Beavis and Butt-Head Do Equestria. Remember how I said it’d come back? Welp, here it is again.

The Plaid Plagiarist just loves Nocturne’s story so much that he couldn’t even change their names to Levi and some other anime character. And because that’d take actual effort to find and replace all of their names.

Now, how did I find out about all of this? Well, the Plaid Plagiarist did something unexpected.

If you thought plagiarizing three stories on his main account was bad, wait until you hear about his alt account.

You see, the Plaid Plagiarist had another account, The Plaid Plagiarist 2. He didn't even try to hide it, it was his username but with a 2 on the end. According to his blog post, he lost access to his laptop and main account for a while and was using his phone to post stories. Instead of accessing his account through his phone, he made a whole new alt account for... reasons. I guess to sell himself more? I don't know. He said he forgot the password, but he could get it with his email if he clicked the "Forgot Password" option.

Anyway, he posted a few stories on there that were very familiar.

Yup. After plagiarizing those stories on his main account, he did it again on his alt account, bringing up his plagiarism total to about six if you count the one Dethlok story I couldn't get a screenshot of. I took a look at the Twilight one, felt like something was off, and pasted it into google to find Rick and Morty Do Equestria.

After that, I checked the other stories on both accounts and reported them.

As a final “F You,” after he deleted my comments calling him out, he made this...

"...broken down, so we will not be able to bring enough supplies for all of the Squadristi that we have." Emilio De Bono looked up to the bald, clean-shaven man in black. "I can't say for certain, but we will be short by at least five thousand men if we can't get the trucks back in working condition. Should we delay the march?"

It’s a word for word copy of Il-Duce-e-la-Principessa. Yup, he stole a story from GIULIO too! So, for those keeping track, that's seven stories in total.

But why? He was already reported for three other plagiarized stories (twice) and caught by then. Why post that story too immediately after? Well, I can only think of one reason.

I think he wanted to get caught. I mean, come on, he didn’t even change the names of Beavis and Butt-Head when he tried to sell it as an Attack on Titan story. What’s more, he stole Chapter 27 of a story and tried to use it as chapter one, the climax of the story (from what I can tell at a glance).

I guess he got some sort of thrill from tricking us? Or maybe it’s something I won’t understand. Maybe this was his reason, to have someone find out and waste their time reporting him. Maybe he wanted to be talked about, who knows.

Maybe that’s why he followed… 7,872 people… … ....

...WHAT?! I knew he was spamming follows, but I didn’t think it was this bad. Hell, maybe he was just crying out for attention?

Even his alt has 1,986 following. It's completely crazy that he plagiarized on both his main account and alt account. He plagiarized his own plagiarism. Why?

Well, it was to get other people to do work for him.

I follow every one why .
1 I'm or was looking for good writing tallant .
2 if anyone need's help coming up with a new story idea .
3 if anyone is interest in writing a Levi story from aot .
4 I have nothing batter to do from my days off from work

All I know is that he’s gone now, thank God. At the very least, now I have a few actually interesting stories to read, so at least that’s something. The Beavis and Butt-Head story actually looks interesting, and Rick and Morty Do Equestria looks nice too.

I do also want to note a special lesson I learned, and it's that the description is essential for a story. He copied stories that had over 500 likes, but each of the ones he posted were dislike bombed. No one ever mentioned how he plagiarized them, so I can only guess they read the description and thought the story would be more of...

I'm going to help with the story.
And hears Chatter 1 wher are my son's

It was a good deterrent in a way, keeping keen eyed readers at bay as they avoided the stories while more casual readers could never find out the truth. As a last note, I want to reiterate that you shouldn't seek this user out.

They're gone now, and it's over. Keep an eye out for plagiarists in the future folks, and check out some of the actual stories he stole from.

Finally, we can say goodbye to the Plaid Plagiarist...

I remember; he pmed me a list of very similar ideas quite some time ago. And honestly, as I pointed out to him, they were more like story requests than “ideas”.

I came across this user before. I really thought he was a decent guy, but I never thought he would stoop that low.

Welp, one less plagiarist to worry about.

Good on ya, friend.

And I thought he had only stolen from me!

He:

Luna has just returned from the moon and is afusting to modern equestria.
The 1st thing she duse is asks her sister wher her sons are .

Me:

After the Elements free her from Nightmare Moon, Luna asks Celestia, "What happened to my daughters?"

5557681
You gotta be kidding me, he stole the descriptions too?! Fuck me, how did he get away with this for so long.

Also, now I need to read this.

He also liked to upvote troll stories and encouraged those authors to keep going.

Consistency?

I just blocked him. It's mostly for the unlikely event that he somehow comes back. Doesn't really do much, but at least it gets him off my Followers list.

i had a stroke reading his writing

5557686

Right? Crazy.

And it's my best story so at least he stole well.

Huh, I had no idea who you were talking about until I saw this:

3 if anyone is interest in writing a Levi story from aot .

Then I looked at the title of your blog post and I realized I knew exactly who you were talking about.

You're out doing the Lord's work, Hi-C

I only know about this because his alt was my most recent follower. I just so happened to notice that it was banned. I'm just thankful he didn't copy my stuff to boot. Don't bother trying to go find him, anybody, because I've since blocked both accounts so that he no longer follows me.

5557707
I honestly doubt many people would want to find him.

... the dude followed me, with both of his accounts...

Hopefully he doesn't come back for round three.

He followed me too, even though I don't fall into his supposed minimum of ten stories.

5557762
That was his name. I used Plaid Plagiarist as a pseudonym to not send users after the dead account. If you wouldn't mind, could you edit his username out of your comment?

I know it might seem silly, especially since it's not a real name or anything, it's just a courtesy to him, one that he doesn't really deserve, but that's besides the point.

I think I know who you are talking about the moment I saw into the rick universe. Good thing that person is banned and should stay ban

5557671
Heh, did that to me as well.

5557779
Yeah, it really sucks when people try to disguise their requests into “ideas”.

Though, I will be honest, I’ve been guilty of doing that sort of thing not that long ago. And I am not proud of it.

5557780
Its coo. I liked him to, shame about what he really was. I wonder what his goal was.? Seems so strange.

5557784
Something among the lines of what this blog said; to get other people to work for him.

5557772
Sorry, I didn't recognize the name you gave as a pseudonym. I mean I thought it was at first, but then you talked about how blatantly he seemed to have been advertising his own plagiarism and that got me thinking it was just part of it. Like hiding in plain sight.

You see, the Plaid Plagiarist was Scottish, and that means they type differently. (This is actually true, apparently

It kind of is, potentially, as there are a lot of Scots words and spellings that aren't intuitively intelligible to speakers of American English - like, this isn't going to do our stereotypical reputation many favours but I've seen an actual physical fist fight break out over whether Scots is a dialect form of English or a language in its own right! - but not in the way this guy was doing it, no.

5558090
Got it, so this guy was probably just pretending then?

Imitation's the sincerest form of flattery. Copying and claiming someone else's work as you own... well, let's just say that this irks me just a tad.

Good sleuthing, Hotel_Chicken, and thank you kindly for informing me of this! You've rendered a great service to the community.

5558097
I mean, he may well have genuinely been Scottish, but that has nothing to do with the way he was writing and spelling things. Actual Scots looks like this.

No one ever mentioned how he plagiarized them, so I can only guess they read the description and thought the story would be more of...

I actually commented on their Rick and Morty story on how it was eerily similar to a different Rick and Morty story I read.

He ended up deleting my comment almost immediately.

5559133
Welp, he’s already banned again. Technically, he was Ban Evading and spam following.

A bit disappointed though. Here I thought we’d have a second Plaid Plagiarist blog in the upcoming months.

He might try again, so let’s all keep an eye out.

5559163
Oh yeah, he's not exactly inconspicuous!

Hahaha, I instantly knew who you were talking about. Dude commented on my high-rated story one day and gave it something like a 20/400. I don't know how that metric came to be, but he wanted me to message him for ideas how to make the story "better"

Hilarious shit, I tell ya

I know I'm a little bit late on the draw here. But the guy that you're talking about sounds a lot like one of my followers that just recently got banned.

Here's the guys 'first' account

Here's the 'second' account

I don't know if this is actually him but it sounds a lot like him. In his second account he stated that he couldn't get into his old account because he forgot his password and he said that he was waiting for his IPad to come back from the shop and he was using his IPhone.

He's banned and I was surprised by it but now that you think about it, if that guy was doing ban evasion again that's probably why he got banned.

5559163
5559174
He also follows himself, so that's kind of a clue if you're keeping an eye on him.

5559246 If he pulled that on one of my fics, I'd have raised some brows. And suddenly, I get the very strange feeling he might...

Even though I write grim, edgy things. And crossovers.

5559246
I’d check that out to get a good chuckle or something, but it’s honestly really hard to scroll through a 7.1k comment section.

Curious, I managed to get to this thread thanks to a... somewhat related one that was in one of the groups I follow. It's quite the shame what some people will get up to in order to try and get their 15 minutes of fame.

This outcome makes me happy. No can I kick him as one of my followers?

*Edit* Found out that blocking him will remove him as a follower.

I may or may not have found another alt account belonging to him...

5570555
I did too. I PM’d then to confirm, and they admitted it. They haven’t done anything wrong yet, so I’m willing to let them slide for now.

FIM taught us a lot about forgiveness and redemption, and if he can actually write a story without plagiarizing it, then he’s redeemed in my eyes. I’ll just have to wait for their “you know what anime” story.

If they plagiarize again, then I’m calling them out and I’ll report them. If not, then I’d be willing to welcome them back to the community.

I noticed awhile back that he had followed me but didn't really think much of it, but after reading this I'm glad he was banned before he could copy any of my works.

We as writers make these stories of our own for various reasons of our own, like practicing our writing, enjoyment and others. So others doing this sort of thing take the enjoyment out of it, especially if the writer of a copied story had put a lot of work into it.

5570559
... Apparently, I'm not quite as forgiving at you. I might be looking at this completely the wrong way - and feel free to correct me if I am - but the way I see it, they've already had second chances on their other alts. I'm willing to give almost anyone a second chance, but once they've done something they know is wrong twice or more times, I will admittedly get annoyed with them. This user has plagiarised stories seven times, so they're not exactly a friend of mine.

The thing is, in the past I've spent a lot of time and effort trying to meet people halfway when I've had issues with them, only for them to turn around a few months later and make my life miserable again. I probably shouldn't be like this, but I've run out of patience because I've been screwed over too many times.

I'll apologise if this sounds rude in any way, because it honestly wasn't my intention, and I respect you for being able to forgive more easily than I can. It's a brilliant trait to have, and it makes you a better person than me. Just, don't make the same mistakes I did. Believe me, it hurts. :ajsleepy:

5570946
I’ll admit, I could be completely wrong. Personally, I saw his second and third account as an extension of his bad decisions rather than as another chance. I think that he thought his actions had no repercussions before, so he kept doing the same thing. But now that he’s learned that he can be banned, again and again if need be, then hopefully he’ll try to change.

I also won’t say I trust him, far from it in fact. You can guarantee that, as soon as that story is posted, I’m going to look through every sentence for even a hint of plagiarism. And if there is, then I won’t be willing to give them another chance after. This is their one and only in my book.

For now, I’m keeping an eye on them to see what happens. If they write a story with their own words, then good for them. And if they decide to plagiarize again, then I’ll report them, post an update blog, and keep reporting them whenever a new alt account crops up.

5570962
I guess that's another way of looking at it, but I'm going to be keeping an eye out just in case anything else happens. If he plagiarises again, hoo boy, I'm going to have a few things of my own to say...

5570993
Perfectly reasonable. And you know what, I’ll give you full license to say, “I told you so,” if he does plagiarize again.

But hey, at least it’ll also make for a good blog post if he does. Better than a short, “he came back, and we banned him” update.

5571035
:rainbowlaugh: If he plagiarises again, you and I are going to have so much fun with this.

Forgive me if I’m wrong, but I think he tried coming back again.

5572538
I know, I was waiting to see if they'd actually publish a story with their own words this time around. I'm certain they'll be back though. Luckily, I already think I know how to find them if they come back.

Aside from their obvious tells, that is.

If they do return, then I hope it's to actually write a story on their own merits, and not copy and paste one.

5559163

He might try again, so let’s all keep an eye out.

He did.

ETA: Well, that'll teach me to check all recent comments first. Notice how he said his story was taking a long time to get approved? Maybe there were mods running it through plagscan.

5572606
It's possible. When I PM'D them (on August sixth) he claimed that he had three chapters of his latest story written and was waiting for approval.

It may have been plagiarized, but given that at least two plagiarized stories had to pass inspection (Since he had two accounts and they need that initial approval) it could either be that they caught on to him, or he was actually writing the chapters but didn't meet the approval standards given his typing style.

I have purplish it I’m just waiting in till it gets approved

Edit: So, this is the PP's fourth known account, and I'll message him a bit after (not if) he makes a fifth account.

Well, he had an excellent excuse. You see, the Plaid Plagiarist was Scottish, and that means they type differently. (This is actually true, apparently, so I don't think he was lying about being Scottish. Maybe he was, who knows.)

I don't think the Plaid Plagiarist's interesting approach to spelling, punctuation and grammar is a consequence of his being Scottish. I have several Scottish friends as well as family from Glasgow, and none of them type like this. If the Plaid Plagiarist were typing in Scots (a dialect derived from English) then this would make sense-except their writing doesn't resemble Scots either.
