Story Notes: The day that Harmony died; plus, some exciting news · 9:40pm Jul 17th, 2021

Thank you all very much for reading "The day that Harmony died" and getting it featured for two days! :pinkiehappy: If you haven't read it yet, click the image to directly link to the story.
Below are some potential questions you may have regarding the story.

Wait, didn't you change the title?

Some of y'all who saw this story very early may have seen that I originally titled the story "There is no Harmony." About two hours after publication, I decided to change the title and description to what it is now. I felt like the old title and description was a bit too antagonizing, for lack of a better term, and so I crawled out of bed (it was 11:30pm local time) and changed the title and description while it was already published.

What was your motivation for writing the story?

Even though I've only been in the brony fandom since 2019, I feel like there's been a lot of tumultuous changes in the fandom within that short time. Without new MLP content to unify us, I felt that arguments within the brony fandom began to stand out. Add to this the major global social upheaval in the year immediately following the end of Friendship is Magic, and I felt that the magic of friendship that made me fall in love with the show in the first place...had died. :ajsleepy: Hence...the death of Harmony.

Now I'm not blaming anyone(s) for this. There are a lot of things that are wrong with this world today, and we are naïve to ignore it. You could say that the current state of the brony fandom is merely a reflection of the state of the world today.

In short, the purpose of this story was for me to express these feelings of "loss", through Sunny Starscout's character. This story was almost cathartic, in a way, similar to my story blue wallflower.

"Death to Utopia! Death to faith! Death to love! Death to hope! thunders the twentieth century in salvos of fire and in the rumbling of guns..."

This quote was cool, @zimmerwald1915, and surprisingly relevant to the story. I'm honestly not sure how divisive of a character Trotsky is these days. I know too little about his career to know how I should feel about him. If someone could enlighten me.

Why did you put that little monologue inside the author's note box?

That monologue of Sunny planting the cherimoya tree was supposed to represent a glimmer of hope in an otherwise tragic story. But as it's in the author's note and not in the main story, you can choose to accept the happy ending, or just leave it as a tragedy. It's a subtle choose-your-own-ending. :ajsmug:

Cherimoyas?

Cherimoyas are a subtropical fruit native to the Americas. They are cultivated in Spain and Asia as well. They known as the "ice cream fruit", for their delicious, sweet flavor. I've never had a cherimoya before but I once ate a relative of the cherimoya, the sugar-apple, at a street market in Singapore. I remember it being delicious, except there were no tables, and it was a real hassle to eat and to spit out all the seeds into your hand. A grossly impractical fruit to eat, but extremely delicious.

Bye, bye, Miss American Pie...

...drove my bronies to the ponies but the ponies had flied,
...and good ol' Faust, was drinking cider and wine,
...singin' this'll be the day Harmony dies,
...this'll be the day Harmony dies...

Eh, I'm not much of a songwriter. :facehoof: I sang American Pie on the drive to work all this week. It's one of my favorite "bittersweet songs." Hence why I chose a title based off this song.

So, what's this exciting news?

Ah, you remembered! As it turns out, as of yesterday, I'm proud to announce that I am officially running a panel at EverfreeNW in-person! :pinkiegasp: :yay:

The panel is entitled "The Unreliable Narrator: What Do They Really Mean?". Here's my blurb:

What is an unreliable narrator? When Rainbow Dash says she likes pies, does she really mean it? An unreliable narrator can distill the true essence of a character’s emotions. This is an interactive, hands-on workshop for MLP fans. No writing experience needed. Just bring pencil and paper!

It will be an interactive writing workshop with lots of fun prompts and opportunities for audience participation! I hope you all will come! :fluttershysad: I'll reveal more information closer to the convention day, once the schedule is finalized. EverfreeNW will be held in Bellevue, WA from Fri Aug 12 to Sun Aug 15.

Oh yeah, I've seen you lurking on the discord server. Hope to see you as well.

I'm honestly not sure how divisive of a character Trotsky is these days.

Still divisive enough for certain people to get stabby over. Just not brought up very much, because communism and communists are passe.
