10 Years of Fimfiction · 2:37am Jul 11th, 2021
So today, 10 years ago I joined Fimfiction.net. My first story here, "The Empty Room", was just very recently published the prior month in Equestria Daily, back when that was the place you'd go to publish stories for this fandom. I mean, there were some already in FF.net, but who could resist the allure of joining a bigger community?
When fimfic started, I didn't immediately jump in, but soon enough I saw that knighty was building something I wanted to be a part of. At the time, I had no idea I was going to become such an active member of Fimfiction.net, but even then I knew that we'd make something special out of it. It's hard to remember exactly what was going on. At the time I joined as a moderator, it was... Wlah, Poultron, Alexstrasza, with Xaquseg and knighty at the helm. IIRC. (It's been a long time)
I remember participating in blog conversations and eventually reaching out to knighty to offer to help. And that is how I started my tenure as a moderator for this site. Even with recent events, I've never lost hope in this site's community, even a decade after it started, through those ten years I've seen an incredible, humbling amount of good will come from this place. That is not something that just dies. It prevails within all of us, and whether fate and opinions have strived to push us apart as the real world rages outside of the confines of fimfiction, I believe that through stories and writing we can understand each other better, and see much more about who we are and who we can be.
This is not an endorsement of anything, but rather an argument that communication is the way to achieve common ground, and from common ground, an objective and consensus of what we as a community are and are not.
Ten years here have introduced me to people that baffle me with their amazing, incredible skills. Some of them have left, others moved on to write new things, some occasionally lurk, but all of them from Obsolescence to Pen Stroke, to Blue Shift to Cold in Gardez to Lucky Dreams or Robcakeran and so many others, that I have been really honestly blessed by fate and chance and cosmic comedy to get to know and be inspired by. (In Rob's case to drink more.) Some of the very first friends I made here, like Trevor, I still see on occassion.
I've met here unexpected friends from decades ago, like Capn Chryssalid, Zef, or Mythrill Moth (RIP). It was here that I came to in my darkest times in those ten years. When I got divorced, or was basically homeless, or couldn't afford to pay electricity. When I needed help. When my dad passed away.
It was here that I shared my brightest moments. The times I was part of this community and felt welcomed and supported. The times I met many of you in person. Where I made some of the best friends I ever could hope to have... despite distance or inconvenience, I've formed bonds with people here that have helped me get my shit together to the point that I was able to buy a home, to get a better job, to learn new things.
Fimfic has been part of my life for a decade. That's not small change and through the vast, vast majority of that time, I've seen good here. And the bad? It's not something we can't tackle, because we've tackled stuff before. Nothing will ever be perfect, but this place will have been a part of many of us for the better. And those that have left, for any variety of reasons, I can only hope that they remember and took the good from here too.
I can't legally go into details. But being a moderator here has put me in a position where I have done a lot of good. And where I have failed, in these ten years, I have learned to be better. That has happened here. This place has opened my eyes to many things, and I hope that it has to you too. Because all of you are part of this place, and all of you have brought it to life with your blogs, your tales, your stories, your comments and your honest love for ponies.
I'll always be grateful for the chance to be a part of this, so knighty, if you're reading this... thanks mate.

You say ten years and then I remember when Twilicorn tag was a thing. It has been a long time since I started reading pony.
The fun part? I've ever only seen two episodes, the 100th and then the one Twiggles babysitters Flurry. Pretty much all that I know about those characters comes from the words of fanfic writers, not the show. And I find that specially awesome.

I'm glad through a chain of happenstance and madness we met. You're a stand up guy, a charmer, and I respect how seriously you take being a father. Frankly, sometimes I feel bad because I don't do enough for you, and I know you're gonna tell me I'm fine, but, still, I feel how I feel, ya know.

D, that was a roller coaster.
First on memory lane (I'd forgotten Wlah even existed. Despite him being one of 2 moderators I've had moderator related conversations with.) and you got all life story on us and it got me remembering all those blog posts, cheering you on or hoping things worked out. Then remembering all those who are no longer here, be it them ghosting off, dying off, driven off (like Device Heretic) or just moving on from the fandom. Then I started getting worried you were going to wrap up by saying you were leaving.
Thank the formerly divine equines that you're still sticking around. We'd miss you something fierce

Magical Trevor sure was fun to have around (Edit: Oh hai 5553050 lol), and I was thinking about MythrilMoth just a couple days ago, God bless his soul. So much has happened these many years, it's hard really to even zoom out enough mentally to take it all in. I've seen a lot more good within this community than without too, so here's hoping for that trend to continue.

Just now started getting really active, hell, I didn't even make my account until just two years ago! But The Sweetie Chronicles was one of the most influential stories I've read, and through it I've been introduced to so many other stories.
