My Review of T.U.F.F Puppy · 9:10pm Jun 28th, 2021

My TV Show Rating Score:

5/5: It is an awesome show!
4/5: It’s a good show with minor flaws
3/5: It’s overall okay/guilty pleasure
2/5: It’s bad but not awful
1/5: Look, up in the sky! It’s super bad!
0/5: MY EYEEEESSS!!!

Greetings to you all! Welcome to my first cartoon show review! Since this show mostly contains 11-minute episodes, I will be reviewing this in a single blog as I prefer not to review short episodes. Anyway, I will be talking about one of Butch Hartman’s famous cartoon shows on Nickelodeon: T.U.F.F Puppy. Ladies and gentlemen, this is one of my favorite cartoons of all time and my favorite Nicktoon show as well. Additionally, it’s a show that I would gladly consider as a huge guilty pleasure for me to watch. It is a comedy series that tells the story of an average-minded dog who joins an undercover, crime-fighting organization to fight against Petropolis’s series of villains who seek to take over the city.

The main character is Dudley Puppy (played by Jerry Trainor). In my opinion, he is both hilarious and cringeworthy at the same time. Not only is he a character who can be helpful in his own way and can be somewhat a badass but he’s also one of the most idiotic protagonists I’ve ever watched in a cartoon. By the gods, he can be aggravating. Most of the time, he’s not that bad. Jerry Trainor is such a talented actor. I’ve always liked him in other Nickelodeon shows I’ve watched since childhood, namely Drake & Josh and iCarly.

Kitty Katswell is, hands down, the BEST character in the entire show. She is very entertaining, charming, competent, understanding, and more normal than most characters of the show. Not to mention that she is very hot. She’s surely given birth to thousands of furries in the fandom (look at the fan art of her on Deviantart). Still, I love her so much as a character and wish she was the main focus.

If I have one critical complaint of her, it would be the constant habit of stating the obvious when something bad happens. Seriously, almost every single time the bad guy reveals his true colors, traps the good guys, or activates a doomsday device, she instantly states what’s already happening as if we, the viewers, don’t know that already. That’s just very annoying. Nonetheless, Grey Griffin was amazing as Kitty which makes this my favorite role featuring her.

As for the villains themselves, to say that they are a huge threat and forces to be reckoned with is incredibly laughable. To be honest, Verminious Snaptrap, The Chameleon, and Birdbrain are complete jokes and cannot be taken seriously at least throughout most of seasons 2 and 3. In the first season, they were actually a threat, they were somewhat serious in their job with funny remarks here and there but still a threat. After that, they were watered down to the point where they are absolute cringelords and the punchlines of their own laughable failures.

Most of the time, they don’t even behave like villains. For example, Snaptrap would make cameos and random appearances in T.U.F.F HQ or anywhere else with nobody giving a shit. He would even hang out with Dudley sometimes as if they’re frenemies or friends. During the title cards of the Snaptrap-featured episodes, whenever his profile is shown, he looks like he’s just smiling for a picture whereas in season one, his profile looks very menacing. See my point?

As for the overall quality of the show, it is full of random humor and mindless entertainment. As much as I love this show, it is weird to see that it has no character arcs, no central themes, no harmonizing character development that stays consistent, or anything that stays... well, sane. It is nothing more than a shit show full of anthropomorphic animals with a random sense of humor... and I love it.

Most of my favorite episodes can be found in seasons 2 and 3 since season 1 starts off pretty bland. Thus, I rate this show a solid 3/5: guilty pleasure. Props to Jerry Trainor, Grey Griffin, Jeff Bennett, Rob Paulsen, Daran Norris, Maddie Taylor, and a few others for their voice roles and to Butch Hartman for making this show exist. Too bad it got canceled after season 3.

Peace!

Show reviews? Hmmm... alright

I remember that watching this show when it was released, but for some reason I wasn´t really kin into it. But I´m glad you like it ! I like Kitty´s design too.

I remember seeing episodes of this show when I was a kid, even seeing promotions for it.

In retrospect, I don’t think “T.U.F.F Puppy” ever resonated with me despite my interest for it. Then again, that was how I felt towards many Nickelodeon shows as a child outside of “Spongebob Squarepants”, “The Penguins of Madagascar”, and “iCarly”.

Funny thing, I recently started to get re-acquainted with the show. I think it definitely has a greater appeal for teens and adults than children, mainly because of the humor and concept.

That's nice to hear!

This is mainly the reason why I would consider this a massive guilty pleasure for me.
