[NEW STORY IDEA] No, I'm not starting this one right now... · 2:05am Jun 28th, 2021
So I've had an idea for a few months about starting up some sort of group for "MLP/EQG adjacent fiction." What does that mean? Well...
So there's this girl. She's got red hair, a fiery temper, and used to work in food service but now works in a bar. She knows and is friends with massively magical beings and from when we first meet her she goes from being seen with suspicion to becoming a hero to the people she loves. Her path is guided by an old, wise magic user who is mostly hands-off. She also starts developing a relationship with a magic user that seems to hint that they're much more powerful...and perhaps not quite as human...as they first appear.
Sunset Shimmer from Sunset's Isekai? Nope, Tori from The Guild Codex: Spellbound.
Oh, but then there's this girl, she's super smart, but it's mostly book-smarts. After an incident involving dark magic and being linked to demonic forces, she winds up having to go out into the world accompanied by a fellow magic user who is hoping to become famous for being a fashion designer.
Sci-Twi and Rarity from Equestria Girls? Nope, Robin and Amalia from The Guild Codex: Demonized.
To drive the point even MORE powerfully home, the same universe has another series (The Guild Codex: Warped) and the primary love interest of the protagonist is a woman who's so massively book smart with so much more knowledge and power than most that she should be able to write her own ticket...if she wasn't horribly, horribly crippled by self-doubt. Moondancer, is that you? Nope, Agent Lienna Shen of MagiPOL.
Fun universe of magic users in an urban fantasy environment aside, the point is that there are other versions of Sunset and Rarity and Twilight and all the rest, and once you tilt your head and squint, it's suddenly obvious.
Problem is, the structure of the groups and forums on this website aren't...really... built for that kind of a thing. Sure, plenty of people here may know exactly what I'm talking about and say, "Hey, yeah...there's this other fiction universe that has a group of girls that look an awful lot like the Rainbooms," or "You know, that trio of really catty girls are awfully similar to the Sirens," or...well, I imagine you get the point.
So, since the site's groups are set up around MLP/EQG fanfics published here, my thought was, "Well, what if we had a series of fiction that just explored these other universes and showed the similarities between them?"
So this brings me to the story idea that I had:
[untitled so far] - Sci-Twi and Sunset have been a couple since their high school days were over. Sunset still kept in touch with Princess Twilight, but since becoming the highest regent of Equestria and the Two Sisters retired, the two have not necessarily drifted apart, but they're not as close as they used to be.
At a request from Principal Celestia, the pair are asked to return to Canterlot High and study the portal. Even after the Rainbooms graduated, magical shenanigans were still happening and the Principal just wants it to stop, or at the very least become manageable.
While investigating the base of the statue (long since rebuilt) a magical incident of mysterious origins causes the two to be sucked into the portal...but never reappear in Equestria.
Sunset finds herself waking up in the middle of someone else's life. This person has a boyfriend who she's never heard of, a pair of fae familiars that seem to know instantly that she's not who she appears to be, and has to be very careful not to attract the attention of a magical police force that is known to cast fireball first and never get around to the questions...
Meanwhile, Twilight wakes up to the very amorous attentions of a demon...a demon who looks a whole heck of a lot like her old classmate from Canterlot High, Flash Sentry. The biggest problem being they're in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness with nothing but a satphone with a bunch of names in it she doesn't recognize.
So, again, I'm not writing it right now, but it is an idea I'd like to pursue down the road in some way.
When did that series come out? I wonder if it didn't start life as EQG fanfic... :O

Oh, jeeze, I only realized today that I hadn't ever actually replied to this, I'm so sorry! And as funny as it would be for The Guild Codex to be directly inspired by EQG, there are enough differences between the series I don't think the relationship was intentional on Annette Marie's (the author) part. To directly answer your question; The Guild Codex: Three Mages and a Margarita, came out in 2018.
