A Samsung S7 Repair · 2:20am Jun 24th, 2021
So today I was working in our lovely repair shop when a customer comes in with an S7. Said he needs a new charge port because the thing's just not taking a charge. Alright, fair enough. One small design flaw though with S7's, the charge ports are incredibly hard to remove without destroying the screen in the process. So I quote a screen and charge port.
I'm checking him in and he elaborates on how this all happened. He said he plugged in his charger and the phone sparked. Cue a surprised look from me. This changes everything. Because now that means either his charge port got fried, or worse, his motherboard. I let him know right there that there's a good chance the motherboard was damaged and if that's the case, it's not fixable. At least not for a price that makes any sense at all. He says ok and I finish checking it in.
After taking the back glass off and getting the motherboard exposed I obviously disconnect the battery. Here's what an S7 (left) looks like opened up. There's an S7 Edge on the right and both these pics have the battery already removed.
Take note of the bottom third of the device. You'll see red and white coax cables. Underneath the motherboard is where the charge port connects to the it. When I opened it up I saw a mostly fine looking device. No obvious signs of a short or any ungodly damage. I thought he had gotten lucky but I noticed a little bit of black on the white coax cable. At that point I had a good idea of where the damage was. I took the motherboard out of the phone and found this.
The motherboard got completely fried from the charger and at this point I stopped my teardown. This phone was dead and gone. I put it back together and told the customer the bad news. At least now he can get a better phone though. Those S7's run like potatoes now! But yeah, interesting little repair I had today.
Something similar happened with my Moto E5 but the thing was already five years old. So I just updated my phone for a better price. But damn that's WILD. :0

Yeah it’s crazy how most people don’t see damage like this when it happens. It’s in extreme cases like this that I wish we had a way to easily show customers what we found like I did. I think it’d be something most would find interesting!

For sure. My phone didn't do a crackle and pop so idk if it fried or if it's just broken when charging. XD cause it used to charge at very specific angles only. Maybe I'll just crack it open and see what went wrong.

Sounds like the pins in the charge port probably just broke or bent. Micro USBs break like that really easy. Can’t count how many Kindle charge ports have broke just by being too rough with it

Lmao oh shit maybe I shouldn't have wasted my money on a new phone oh well good to know

Some things are made to be broken. They don't want us keeping phones more than a couple of years.
