Why Cozy Glow had no free will in Season 9, but why the ending is okay.

You read the title right. I believe that Cozy Glow actually lacked any free will in terms of the outcome in Season 9. In short, she was led down the evil path, which ended in punishment, but that doesn't mean she was immune to any potentially different outcome. That's the short version, let's get into the long version...

A Different Kind of Ending - Additional info: Fixed points in time.

So randomly, I felt like expanding on one of the ideas presented in A Different Kind of Ending that most people didn't seem to catch onto. Or at least, few people commented about it. And it's the fact Chapter 1 of the story almost ended with what was nearly the same outcome as canon, all three of the legion of doom turned to stone. What's up with that? Shouldn't I have written something more

    5u0myn0n4 can't move on.

I just wrote a blog post a couple of weeks ago addressing one argument, here I go with another.

I'm probably going to regurgitate a lot of the same arguments, but I'll try my best to frame it as differently as I can.

"Tragic backstory is never an excuse"

I don't know what it is, but lately I've been seeing a lot of "sob sad story is no excuse for evil doing" in regards to Cozy conversation. First of all, we don't even know Cozy's backstory. If you wanna believe it is a sad, tragic, maybe even abuse past, then sure. Starlight Glimmer was pretty much that. (though she is often ridiculed in this regard too so it's not like there's a double

A Different Kind of Ending - Additional info: Fixed points in time. · 5:21pm Jun 7th, 2021

Shouldn't I have written something more original?

So here's the thing.

The story starts with Cozy Glow seeing the future, and seeing the actually ending. Despite that, Chapter 1 does not end well for them. The idea I was that, the title states that this story is similar to The Ending of the End, but is in fact A Different Kind of Ending. But how different? That's for the reader to discover. It starts with mostly similar events, but slowly grows more unfamiliar as it progresses.
Then, admittingly, sort of glosses over things and skips to the throne room scene, mostly to fit under the 10,000 word limit. I thought about ways they could have had a completely different assaults, (scrapped idea I had was an attack on Manehatten) but nah, they do the same thing. Cozy saw how successful their plan was at first, she goes along and rides with the flow of time. But as foretold, she finds a bumpy road ahead in the grand scheme of time. And that's just the thing. Time.

Is the future fixed? Or can it be changed? These are questions I was hoping readers would think about reading Chapter 1.

But Cozy, faced with the mane 6 trotting across Equestria, and next to no ideas besides not fight them (fighting them was shown to be their downfall) Chrysalis and Tirek do not take a liking to what she has to say.
Everything that happened here does not go in Cozy's favor, and things just go way downhill before they even encounter the mane 6 again.
In an ironic twist, she is turned to stone way sooner than predicted. You might expect knowing the future would've given them a huge advantage, but it ended up being a detriment that tore them apart.

What I was aiming for in Chapter 1, was that despite Cozy's insight into the future, and her numerous warnings, Chapter 1 concludes with basically the same outcome as canon. All three turned to stone.

I got criticized for the "oh so original idea" of putting Tirek and Chrysalis to stone, being decided by the student 6, in spite of Discord's absence, but that's exactly what I was aiming for.

It's implied that, and what I had in mind is that their defeat, and them being turned to stone, is a fixed point in time. Despite how different
the lead up was, it ended the same way, with all 3 of them in stone, thus concluding that there really is no possibility of a different outcome. No matter the circumstances, they are destined to lose and suffer.

If the story ended here, it wouldn't have been that different an ending after all, despite Cozy's best efforts.

Chapter 1 almost gives the false impression that this is the end of the story. My hope was that, with the reader now thinking something like "well, I guess this isn't so different, and there wasn't anything they could have done to prevent the outcome." and leave them disappointed if it ended here. But that's when Chapter 2 comes into the mix, where we do finally see a different outcome arise. It's when Cozy gains an unexpected surge in magic, does she gain the power to really change destiny.

In Chapter 2, that's when I really sunk my teeth into the meat of the story. Cozy really going hard into Twilight Sparkle ranting, and fighting, exposing what was supposedly about to come. Basically every opinion I could express about Cozy was expressed here, and was really what stirred the conversation in the comments section, as expected, but the time paradox stuff had already passed.

With Cozy weakening, and the creatures of Equestria bashing the dome and damaging her form, she is at risk of shattering. An actual different, but much more painful ending. An ending she actually comes to term with. Having only seen two possible outcomes (canon, and now shattering), and no way out.
In her mind, she succeeded because she got through to Twilight, and decides she'd rather be at peace for good, than be in suspended animation.

So while very few people commented on Chapter 1, I think that means I was successful. Chapter 1 is like tepid water, it's meant to get the reader's feet wet the idea that, whether they realized it this way or not, was a fixed point in time that could not be changed. It isn't immediately obvious just how different this story will be just yet. Then Chapter 2 comes along and makes a much bigger splash and shatter expectations, and I think it did its job in that sense. The story has proper build up, and pay off.

Chapter 1 ends with the implication that certain points in time are fixed, but Chapter 2 shows that certain things can be changed, and destiny is not fixed, but is rather of our own making. And that's the main takeaway from this story.

I forgot to bring this up in the actual blog, but I may as well mention this little fact. (May as well mention it now, don't know when else I'll bring it up.)

Another title I considered for the story during development was 'Little Yellow Blanket', or 'Tiny Yellow Blanket', which off course is reference to the couple of scenes where Cozy's blanket is used for fun narrative purposes.

Ultimately though I did go with the title that sounded more derivative of the actual episode. Though I do think an inconspicuous title like this could've been fun in its own right.
