Introducing: A Constant State of Atrophy! · 5:00pm May 9th, 2021
Hello, everyone!
I blogged about this a while back, but I wanted to loop around again and give you all a less mysterious explanation now that the fic has been posted.
While I was working on Hearts Beat, my focus was always on Twilight and Vinyl. It was their story, and--even though other characters came in and out of that story--I never wanted to take any huge detours to talk about anyone else. That said, there were two characters that stood out to me and to all of you: Flash Sentry and Octavia.
They came together as part of a fairly obvious, sitcom-esque plotline: Twilight and Octavia both have to deal with their exes in a big, awkward worlds-collide moment. And, for some added fun, I threw in a final mention in the last chapter, implying that... something had happened between them, and they were friends? Dating? Something??
It was all for fun, really. I wasn't planning on taking that anywhere, and I didn't really have any idea what they got up to while we weren't looking. But, after a year of musing about it (especially thanks to some of you guys who commented about them), as well as some re-read of the fic I wrote during a month-long fever dream, I realized there was some potential in the form of missing pieces-- places where some character development was strongly implied, and yet happened off-screen.
My hope is that this story 1) answers some of your questions about Octavia and Flash's extremely poor decision-making skills 2) convinces you to like em a little (cause BOY did you all hate em) and 3) bolsters the original with some more detailed, careful character work.
And... Yeah. I'm already making some plans for a third installment
