It Is Recommendsday, My Dudes #162

And now back to our regularly scheduled program and my attempt to clean out my rookies shelf. (I've only got a few, I'm determined to at least catch up to this month with them.)

It Is Recommendsday, My Dudes #161

Okay, so there's still new people to get through but you gotta remember that this blog series is mostly reliant on my whims. And I'm a little bored on that front, so I'm gonna switch gears and do a different pair of stories. Because I can. Also because I was reminded of one of these stories this last week and they're pretty damn funny.

Probably the hardest genre to get right is mystery. Not only do you need to craft a solid narrative that fulfills all the requirements of a good drama or comedy (because without that it's just a trumped-up logic puzzle), but you also have to create that mystery itself. It can't be too obvious - otherwise why bother - but you also can't make it rely on bullshit and information the reader is never

It Is Recommendsday, My Dudes #159

So continuing down the road to clear out my new authors folder, I'm going to put the focus first on one of the newer folks I really like: pneu. They've got a couple of really good ones, but the one I'm settling on today is my favorite of theirs so far: Haycartes'

    Author's Quarterly Update: Spring 2024

This quarter's been a good news/bad news sort. (For around here, not in general. Life in general is fine.) Good news? I got a ton of writing done, which I'll get to on the specific story entries. I turned a bit of a corner and got some great work done that I'm excited about. Bad news? I am so behind on my reading. I mentioned last time that between Jinglemas and my reading project I had

The New Blood: Writers Worth Attention · 10:29pm Feb 28th, 2021

:trixieshiftleft:Hey, FoME, I came across a new writer that's worth checking out. You should look at them.

:derpytongue2:Maybe you should make a blog post about them?

:trixieshiftright:...Oh yeah. That would make sense.

So! In honor of being reminded that I can do that!

An integral part of a the survival of a fandom/subculture/site is being able to bring in new blood - an influx of quality contributors to replace the constant departure of the old guard and to bring new ideas and attitudes to the group. No site survives without that. With G5 looming like a piano, this is exactly the time to be mindful of new contributors.

The last couple months have seen some great new additions around FIMFiction. Some don't need help to get traction (like Bicyclette, who I'm sure most of you are already familiar with), but new writers slip under the radar easily. So as my part in keeping the community live and following up on my RCL interview:

There’s a lot of awesome authors out there who I think deserve this recognition more than me, but I’ll try to take it with humility and use this little bit of horsefame to boost those who I think have earned it and celebrate their recognition next.

The first is the author that kicked off the thought for this: nagoluckywriting. Not even three months along, they've got four stories up. Only one's broken out of the grey bar and they've barely got more total comments by other people than stories in the library.

Nagolucky's works jumped out at me not just for the very capable writing but also for their interesting pitches - Photo Finish and Blueblood reminiscing about their brief encounter at a youth camp years before; Rainbow Dash dealing with a doping scandal; filly Twilight journeying to see the Northern Lights. The stories themselves are well-written and Nagolucky has a talent for writing the bittersweet.

With only a tiny 6 followers, they're very much under the radar and worth a look from a broader audience.

RDT first came to my attention a few months ago with their first story, A Crash Course In Comedy. Having been part of the conversation that prompted the story's idea, I couldn't help but take notice.

RDT really came into their own with the more recent Tools of the Trade, however. They'd shown a talent for comedy with the first two, but that third story really showed an extra dimension to RDT's work and stepped things up.

Another writer who's deeply unappreciated, RDT has zero stories out of the grey bar, three comments across their stories in total and just 15 followers.

The last author I'm gonna plug today is actually an old account - regged 2012 - but only started writing very recently. And I'll also openly admit a bias towards TamiyaGuy as they are a fellow Wallflower aficionado. He's not quite as underappreciated as the other two, but still has remarkably little attention compared to the quality of the writing.

Now, if you're at all familiar with Scampy's work you should have a good idea what to expect here. Tamiya's stories are primarily focused on Sunset (via human Twilight), but those self-harm tags ain't for show. And while Scampy does remain queen of the self-harm fic? Tamiya does an absolutely excellent job with the topic. It's sensitive to the subject matter, dealt with realistically and makes me squirm to read. A hearty recommendation from me, though with the big asterisk of knowing the topic matter and if it's in your arena or not.

There's probably a ton of other writers I could/should plug right now - a few I've let slip aside for the moment because they've got support groups like the Speedwriting community or they're already gaining speed, and there's a bunch more in that grey area of having traction but not yet making it big yet. (I still find it kind of weird that I count as having made it - someone referred to me as a 'heavy hitter on FIMFiction' the other day and I automatically scoffed.) But hopefully these three are a good starter taste and we'll collectively get to introduce that new blood to the site and give it the attention it deserves.

I know right. What a stupid nerd, with his stupid nerd face.

Serious note though, thanks for the recommendations! Tools of the Trade looks intriguing with a chapter title like "Cruel Comedy"...

I heard he's Br*tish.

Now I see only one story, which makes me wonder what happened but maybe it's none of my business idk?
