Ponyfinder Magic Items · 3:40am Feb 24th, 2021

From the same game as Amarach.

A magic feather, worn like a necklace, that allows the wearer to turn into an eagle. Stolen from an eagle with the power to turn into a pony. May not have been a normal eagle.

A statuette of Brionnú, the Forge Alicorn. Her tools are rendered in immaculate detail, but the statue's face is blank. Amarach doesn't remember what she looked like. Make an offering of fire and blood, and she will bless your crafts. A drop of blood is enough; she isn't greedy.

A set of horseshoes that grant the wearer supernatural strength. They invariably fall off when worn, unless the wearer swears an oath that they shall never harm the innocent. Once the oath is sworn, there is no way to remove the horseshoes. But they do handle details of hoof-trimming and polishing by magic as well, which is nice.

A shrine to Ghealach, the Alicorn who stole the moon. Of course, the moon was in on the whole thing. She wanted to get away from her father, and Ghealach was quite handsome. Offer the tail hair of a beautiful mare, and he'll enhance your magical gifts. The marriage didn't work out.

A pony made of stone, that performs back-breaking manual labor day and night without fail. Amarach explains that it isn't a golem, because golems are powered by souls. The implication that the stone pony has no soul is perhaps more worrying. Perhaps it wants yours.

An altar to Fuisce, the Alicorn of Wine. The stained-glass pane at the back depicts her so drunk she can barely stand, with a beautiful mare on one shoulder and a handsome stallion on the other. Offer her a glass of fine whiskey or expensive wine, and she'll bless you with supernatural knowledge of distilling. She's kinder than other spirits -- if she doesn't drink the glass on the altar, you may drink it in her place.

A harp that allows anyone to play with the skill of a great master, but once a pony begins playing, they are compelled to keep playing until their hooves bleed. Pricking the hoof before beginning allows the performer to safely leave at any time.

A concentrated love potion. Meant to be diluted 2:1 with pure water and poured into two glasses. Both parties drink, and instantly fall into true love for the rest of their days. If drunk undiluted, their love is obsessive, consuming and jealous. If diluted with an alcoholic beverage instead of water, the pair will be in lust for the rest of their days, but will feel no compulsion to marry.

The pony made of stone has big Night Vale energy.

This is a big compliment.

Amarach is your character right? But she also creates magic items for the party?

I like you wrote workarounds right into the description, prick yourself beforehand and criteria met!

Yeah, she's an Arcanist (if you play Pathfinder), with the Craft Wonderous Item and Versatile Crafter feats for flavorful magic item production.

And yeah, I was shooting for these items to still be useful to the party, so they can't have a serious downside, but I wanted them to have some nice fluff.

And the harp that compels you to play has big SCP foundation energy. Probably safe class TBH because it’s easily avoidable and it doesn’t kill you just makes your hooves bleed a bit.

A faint air of menace and a stronger one of comedy. I'll have to remember these when my campaign reaches the point where the PCs start getting the really good stuff.

Nice. Thanks for sharing. :)

For the record, the "easily avoidable" is what earns Safe class; the designation doesn't actually care how hard the SCP can kill you, only what happens if you stuff it in a box and forget about it.

There's a parody of Wagner's Ring by Stephen Leacock in which his equivalent of the Tarnkappa is "a magic helmet which gives the wearer the ability to appear to carry on an interesting conversation, while actually going to sleep." It was made by "Dampfboot, Tinsmith of the Gods." Dampfboot is German for "steamboat."

My father thought this was hilarious and used to read it aloud at parties. Which explains a lot.

So Ghealach is Sokka, got it.

Great, going to have to pick up Fallen London again

Just to elaborate on this because I do so every time I see it.
Safe items will stay in a box, no muss, no fuss.

Euclid items won't stay in their box for various reasons. Most items are classed as Euclid because, from a Doylist perspective, the articles are more interesting if there is buildup on how this thing is Secured, Contained, and Protected. From a Watsonian perspective, Euclid objects require certain minor rituals or easily-obtained materials to Contain1, or are intelligent and therefore may circumvent their Containment because they are bored, or feel the Foundation has not kept up their end of the bargain in some picayune manner.

Keter objects are difficult to Contain. They actively eat through the meter-thick layers of rare substances lining their cell or otherwise require Herculean efforts to contain, e.g. the legendary Procedure 110-Montauk which involves exceptionally distasteful acts and exceedingly specific props that, within the lore, has the Object that said Procedure Contains widely considered a punishment detail, despite an O5 publishing a memorandum counterindicating this perception.

Thaumiel-class objects are boxes for Securing, Containing, and Protecting other objects.

Neutralized objects are no longer anomalous, having been explained by modern science, disabled, or destroyed, and therefore no longer require Containment. Some neutralized objects remain in SCP Foundation care because they aren't trusted to stay that way.

1: example- "as agreed to by SCP-XXXX-1, SCP-XXXX is to be stocked each week with a minimum of 20 liters of Mtn Dew Voltage® in any commercially-available form factor, including 355ml cans and 591ml or 2-liter bottles. Containers must be factory-sealed2. SCP-XXXX-1 will accept other Mt Dew® variants as an alternative if Mtn Dew Voltage® cannot be reasonably3 sourced.
2:It is unknown how SCP-XXXX-1 can tell if the containers have been resealed. Unauthorized attempts at investigating this ability are subject to temporary re-assignment for a period of no less than 3 weeks, as per the Foundation's agreement with SCP-XXXX-1 after repeated abuse4. Authorized attempts require prior notice, and must be carried out using 355ml or 591ml containers provided in addition to SCP-XXXX-1's normal allotment.
3:'Reasonably' is defined as 'obtained from a store within 30 kilometers of Site-██, preferably from ██-███(a regional grocery chain)', as per the Foundation's agreement with SCP-XXXX-1.
4: "Why is it that there is ALWAYS a researcher who violates these agreements? Is there something about this job that desensitizes our researchers to the fact that these Objects have thoughts and feelings, too? Or does this job only attract the [REDACTED] assholes who invariably eventually feel it proper to violate the simple courtesy of not [EXPUNGED] in someone's beverage for █████ and giggles? I mean, my god... the man WALKED HIMSELF into our care. he complies with all our requests, and otherwise just sits in his cell, drinking mountain dew and reading fanfiction on a Foundation-approved terminal. What the HELL is wrong with us?! "-Site-██ Director █████████

Many of these items are actually quite low level! For instance, the altar to the Forge Alicorn just gives a +5 Sacred bonus to the users next Craft (Blacksmithing) check. I wanted the items my character made for the party to be flavorful from Level 1.

I am enjoying this campaign and further enjoy sharing!

5460464

...dammit, that wasn't intentional, but now I can't unsee it. :rainbowhuh:

5460583
While Sunless Sea is set in the Fallen London universe they are not the same game.

As far as I am aware that line is never used in Fallen London. But I didn't play much of Fallen London so maybe it was somewhere I never reached.

... should get back to Sunless though, both Sea and Skies. Too many games, not enough time.

5460582
Glad to hear it. :)

And by the way...
"Her tools are rendered in immaculate detail, but the statue's face is blank. Amarach doesn't remember what she looked like."
Given what you've shared here about the life and works* of the mare who's currently known to herself as "Amarach" and has forgotten so many things, I have a bit of a suspicion here. :D

*Including this very description. Who would have such familiarity with the tools but not the face? Well, perhaps the person who used those tools frequently and heavily, but only saw the face when she happened to look in a mirror...

5461149

Shhhh don't get ahead of the class. :D

Yes you're right.

5461555
Ah, righto. :D

But thanks! :D
