I gave in to curiosity and asked a couple of questions of Katrina Hadley (and Ishi Rudell) regarding Sunset Shimmer’s domicile—specifically, what if any backstory the building and the neighborhood had, and how the interior floor plan fit in the building exterior seen in “Monday Blues”. Ms. Hadley’s answers:
- Sunset’s place is in an older, more run-down low-rent district in or near downtown.
- The interior and exterior look like they don’t fit together because . . . they don’t fit together. Time and money were limited, and they never could be sure the series would continue, which had a number of knock-on effects. They didn’t have the luxury of generating ancillary material to help with consistency, such as floor plans. Backgrounds were created only as needed, so the interior was created a year or more before a script required an exterior. In turn, that exterior likely was, in her words, “slapped together”.
Hm.
I love getting the inside (pun unintended but appreciated) scoop on this sort of stuff
