    Story Update?

"Hey, that was a weird ass post yesterday. Does that mean there's a story update coming?"

No, I just thought it would be funny in the moment.

    "Will there be?"

Blog #24 - Happy 4th and I Am Still Alive

So since my last post, it's been... a little bit of time. Only a little less than four months...

In that time I've changed positions at work a few times and I'm now working a lot more. I haven't had the time to write, but I'm gonna try and force myself back into it, guys.

Anyways, hopefully, I'll post something again here soon.

    Best,

    Blog Post #22 - 8+ Years

Jesus Christ, it's been over eight years since I joined this website. Eugh. Time flies, I suppose.

So, what would I say of my time on this website? A few words describe it, though they carry mixed emotions.

Writing is hard. Anyone wanna talk about World War 2?

What’s your opinion on FPS games that portray WW2? I have nothing against them at all, just interested if you play video games such as BF5 or Call of Duty: WW2

Thoughts/feelings on war crimes that haven’t been resolved?

Depends on the game. Generally speaking, they're not accurate at all in terms of uniforms and weaponry, but they're still fun on their own.

Battlefield V is an atrocity of made-up uniforms and they didn't even include the standard-issue rifles of the war at game release.

Call of Duty WWII is generally the same as Battlefield V, with lots of made-up uniforms outside of the promo art and weird combinations of weapons with attachments that just straight-up never existed.

Now, I think they can still be fun (I haven't played either, I've only looked at the art and models after getting a lot of questions from my friends about it), but that depends on the design of the game.

One of the most realistic WWII shooters I've ever seen in terms of uniforms, weapons, equipment, vehicles, etc. is Hell Let Loose. Highly recommend it. It's early access and has some issues, but it's so good and has a great feeling of terror when a tank round slams into the building next to you, or when an MG42 opens up over your head as you're crawling through heavy enemy fire.

Generally speaking, I like them - they get people into studying it - but if anyone uses it to say "I know a lot of about WWII" then they're very much wrong. Which happens at a lot at my living history stuff.

Absolutely. Just setting aside the Atomic Bomb that launched the Cold War and all that came with it, we've been riding the high of the post-war economic boom and the sudden leap in technology and social policies that came with it. A lot more women started working because of the war, we desegregated the military because of it, and we completely overhauled military doctrine. As of late, we also see a lot of the military wanting to return to WWII style doctrines - such as the Marine Corps wanting to move back into the Pacific and training on amphibious assaults, or the Army bringing back the Pinks and Greens and restructuring units.

WWII is a monumental event that may have faded from the public eye somewhat, but it wasn't so long ago that it doesn't impact everything around us still.

I think you'd be hard-pressed to close those things now. Governments all around the world want to sweep that under the rug and move on. Especially since almost everyone who partook in them are either dead or so old that you're gonna arrest a 90-year-old dude for something that happened 75+ years ago. I think it should be acknowledged, definitely. Especially the Allied War Crimes so that we're reminded that even the best-intentioned people can do evil things when given the power to do so.

I’m a keen fan of Sunset Shimmer and WW2, which initially drew me to your tale. I’ve studied the conflict since I was a kid: 40+ years of movies, documentaries and so many books...

At any rate, I look forward to your next installment. If I can be of any assistance regarding writing or history, please feel free to shoot me a line.

Are you a fan of the Youtube channel World War Two? Indy Neidell and his colleagues are doing a splendid job illustrating the events that took place during the conflict.

Understood. Soviet troopers didn't win 65% of the war by themselves. All credits to the americans.

Reminds me of this wonderful vid an animator did about modern WII games:

True, I’ve only brought that up since , I assume ones in military families have a bias towards certain countries. Two that come up to mind are the “The Rape of Nanking” and The USS Liberty incident. Even tho they’re in the past some of the you get folks are displeased by the terms of events that haven’t been in a sense “resolved”, mostly on the country.

I was a huge fan of The Great War, their series before that, but I haven't gotten into World War Two yet. Personally, I'm more interested in specific units and aspects of the war, typically stuff my writing/reenacting groups are focused on, like the 36th Infantry Division. I think if it's anything like The Great War, it's good for people who have more curiosity than the average person into this sort of thing but aren't about to go digging through books and archives on the subject.

The Soviets absolutely kicked ass in both World Wars. It was because of them that the Eastern Front even existed and kept the Germans split between two fronts. They're mostly pushed out of the eye of the public since we would immediately go into the Cold War with them. Also because I would argue the average person couldn't care less about Russia in the war because most can't say their family fought in the war for that side.

That being said, I fully support the representation of more countries on both fronts. I have a friend who's spent a long time studying French in WW2 and constantly is trying to tell their story without all the surrender jokes and myths. Even just learning about them really opened my eyes to the true stakes of this war.

There are those rather famous war crimes, but there are smaller ones that we'll never hear about really.

For example, there's the fairly well known Malmedy Massacre of December 1944. The 1st SS Panzer Division gunned down 84 American POWs in a field and left their corpses. This caused massive outrage on the allied side and the commanders would later be tried at the Dachau Trials in May 1946.

However, a less spoken about one is the Chenogne Massacre of January 1945. US forces of the 11th Armored Division, after learning of the Malmedy Massacre, rounded up 80 German soldiers and gunned them down with machine guns, in a very similar way to the Malmedy Massacre. This was, by all accounts, done in vengeance for the Malmedy Massacre. Why haven't you heard about it? Because all up the chain of command of the 11th Armored Division never investigated it, even refusing to after an investigation was demanded by General Eisenhower.

There are tons of little things like this that we'll never fully get answers or closure on, but even if we did somehow get the information, what then? The participants are either dead or so old that to truly try and convict them would be more of a political show trial than any sort of attempt of justice. At this point, that'll all fade to the world of Academia and the general public won't really care regardless.

Honestly? The hard part has been just sitting down and doing it. Every time I start writing something, I see something that bothers me and it makes me want to rewrite the whole thing. Combine that with work and the general stress of life, I'm not doing a whole lot. But I'll try to get things moving again soon. Appreciate the offer!

Just write what you were planning to. Once you’re done, walk away and don’t even glance at it for a week. Come back to it with fresh eyes and THEN edit.

Perfect is the enemy of good.
