State of the Scribe: February 2024

Another month, albeit the shortest of the year. I still haven't had a chance to get into the process side of my writing and write that detailed plan for the year, been too busy writing a novel. Guess that's a good problem to have.

State of the Scribe: January 2024

This is exactly the 71st month I've posted a patreon calendar. Almost but not quite six years of writing fanfic, sharing all these ideas with you that would otherwise stay trapped in my head. I couldn't begin this post, and the beginning of a new year without expressing my profound thanks to everyone who keeps supporting me. Your help, big or small, is the only reason I'm still able to write

New Story: The First Willowbrook Christmas!

Hey pones! A Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! Last year I wrote a short story for the holiday, but the editing pushed it back for a little while. For those who enjoyed Sisters of Willowbrook, I have a story for you to check out! The final chapter will get posted tomorrow:

Almost packed every single day with stuff this month, holy crap.

First, some of you probably had the chance to check out my recent blog entry, where I discuss my desire to make writing full time a long-term career move and the different ways I'll be trying to give more to my patrons. I'm thrilled and humbled by the outpouring of support I received, as well as the influx of new patrons who decided to support me. You give me hope for the year ahead.

The TLDR on that if you don't care to read the blog is this: I'll be trying to enhance what I do for my patreon supporters from now on, without cutting back anything I share with everyone. The two things that were most popular were surveys to give stories more words, and posting lore articles from my writing notes. You've seen two of those articles now, one on the dreamlands and one on Zircon as it appears in Anemoia.

I left these first few public so people had some idea of what these articles would entail, but from now on they'll be restricted to Patrons only. I'd like to stress they are not expected reading, they aren't required to enjoy a story, and anything they contain that you need to know in a story will appear in that story. Mostly they're for the opposite purpose, for those who want to learn more than the story will have time to cover.

The survey is more straightforward, which is why you see Fine Print getting an extra chapter this month (on the 23rd). We'll see what wins the survey next month, and get a little more of that.

The big news for this month, as though the calendar didn't make it obvious enough, is Forbidden Places is coming to fimfiction! Hence the absolute wall of chapters there--this story will update twice as fast as normal, so it has some catching up to do in order to get chapters off Patreon and onto fimfiction. In future months it will update with 16,000 words of new content a month, rather than the deluge we're getting this February.

In case you haven't heard the pitch yet, Forbidden Places is the story of a group of urban explorers, who accidentally stumble into a Worldgate into Equestria. This portal dumps them in the desert south of the Badlands, leaving them with bodies they don't understand in a world they don't know.
They soon discover returning the way they came is too dangerous to attempt, so they decide on another way: search Equus for other worldgates, so they can finally return home. If only any of the other portals were any safer...

Fine Print and Anemoia both continue towards their endings, not much to say there. I thought Anemoia would take two months, but that story has expanded beyond what I expected. Still, I'm having fun. Hopefully you are too.

Got a new story in the monthly queue. We hadn't worked out all the details last month, so I couldn't share anything about her until now.
The Tall Tale of Sweet Sauce tells the story of mysterious pony who has been fighting to return to Equestria for years. Unfortunately he doesn't return to the powerful body or fanfare he might've expected. Equestria is a different place than he remembers, and even worse he's a young earth pony. Without power or respect, Sweet Sauce is determined to accomplish his mission.

Dreamlands also started last month: the story of a lone bat determined to save her tribe by traveling through the Dreamlands and saving Nightmare Moon from banishment.

Then of course we have Optimal GM, an ongoing optimalverse story (which will probably get a new name when it comes to fimfiction next month) about Equestria Online being used as a remote GMing tool far superior to the tools we're stuck with today.

Oldest of these is Return to Sender, a sequel story set in the universe of Message in a Bottle about what happens when Equus makes contact with the first truly alien race.

As usual each of these stories will remain on Patreon until they are complete, at which point I'll post them on fimfiction for everyone to read. But the first chapters are always open to everyone. Here are some links in case you want to check one of them out.

And that's everything for this month. Another huge thanks to my patrons for making all of this possible. Thank you for helping me follow my dream of becoming a full-time writer.

Hopefully I'll have more news about my first original novel next month. First draft is about 20k from being complete, and I should have time this month to get that done and begin the editing process. I'll keep you posted.

How many chapters of optimal GM are already written on your Patreon? I canceled all my Patreon to little while back.

Somewhere between Six and eight, I don't recall the precise number. But the full story will be coming to fimfiction next month, it's just waiting on a cover.
