hello all
we are currently in a temporary living accommodation with a friend/acquaintance. we managed to get all our important things into storage, and have escaped our previous scary landlord/tenancy situation.
then our paypal was locked for such a high volume of donations.
yes, you literally helped us so much it broke the internet.
so right now while we are still alive, we can't access any of the funds people donated to help us. we tried getting a hold of paypal support, but even though we were able to speak to a real person, they didn't seem hopeful that the issue would be resolved.
currently paypal wants proof of our address in canada, which we do not have, obviously being homeless. we are not sure how or if it's possible to get a proof of address for our previous place, and are altogether rather worried we won't be able to resolve the issue at all. paypal's customer support is legendarily terrible and obfuscated due to the nature of their business. it took us upwards of 2+ hours to find out what we were even supposed to do to fix the issue, and when we reached someone on the phone, they sounded just as baffled and helpless towards the situation as we are.
if anyone has any idea what to do to unfuck ourselves at this current juncture, it would be appreciate. otherwise, we are hunkering down until the end of the month.
we will post a proper thank you to everyone who donated once we're sure our situation is not going to escalate any further. safe to say we have been crying a lot, feeling very overwhelmed and at a loss for words. i suppose if you're a writer at a loss for words that's kind of ironic. anyway.

So sorry and angry to hear about Paypal. :( Keep trying. That money is yours. Paypal is notorious for this, not just when it comes to donations, but when small businesses sell a lot but intermittently (book releases, etc.) See if you can get a different customer service rep. And then another one. Find out exactly what "proof of address" means. Let us know what they say. Maybe somebody here can help, with more information. Do you have a checking account?
They CLAIM on the Internet that if you contact the Resolutions Dept and have the following:
*Your telephone number.
*A statement for the credit card or bank account linked to your PayPal account.
*The email address you used to register your PayPal account.
that you won't need anything else. So what's with this demanding a physical address?

It doesn't hurt them to sit on your money, so they can play this game as long as they want, but you need to keep trying until you find a sympathetic, knowledgeable, helpful person. Ask if you can prove that you live in Canada in general, if it's even required--why isn't the info list given on the Internet enough? What's with this address demand? But if you can prove that you live in Canada as a permanent citizen, that ought to be MORE than they'd need. What's the point of Internet money if you can't use a non-stable address?

Okay, one more thought, this has nothing to do with Paypal's criminal shenanigans, it's more about survival. I don't know how this works; is it possible to send Amazon gift cards to an email address? Could you receive help from us that way, if you end up needing food, etc.? Keep us posted.

i just wanted to say that this string of comments (and any others like it) are helpful beyond belief. it feels very stupid for us to say this so often as a 'writer', but we do not have words to properly express how safe, sane, and healthy hearing things like this makes us feel.
presently, a lot of our fear/guilt/shame is over the sense that we are alone; alone in our opinions and attitudes, alone in the way we perceive the world, alone in our objection to this situation. having another human being, wherever they are, put into such cogent and real words and sounds the way they're feeling, that so perfectly mirrors our own thoughts and feelings... it makes us feel real. i'm sorry. that was all probably off course.
we just wanted to say thank you from the bottom of our hearts. seeing another human being incensed by what's going on makes us feel like we may actually deserve help. we can't say thank you enough times. thank you. <3

Unfortunately, I think Ko-Fi always routes through Paypal, unless the recipient has a Stripe account.
