Bout time for an update, eh?

Not a big enough update to qualify for Rabbit Tracks, but this is just to say: Work is continueing on "Just a Pony", albeit slowly. Two more chapters down, then I got sidetracked by videogames, now I'm sidetracked by homework and sickness, and then hopefully back to "Just a Pony" soon!

    Irony

I tried to write a blog about how I haven't been able to write. I accidentally hit ctrl+r and refreshed the page, losing everything I had written. A cruel bit of irony. I am tired and angry with myself and scared for my future as a writer and I do not have the energy to retype it, so pretend there is some sincere and heartfelt explanation here and you're moved by the struggles of some weird

Pictures should be fixed across all stories

At this point if anyone is seeing broken images in my fics on Fimfiction please let me know! For anyone looking for a new image hosting site with Discord having done the Big Suck, I used Postimages and it was rather simple and efficient.

    Image hosting

Real quick, I know my images are all borked again; what are folks using for image hosting these days? Needs to be free and the less likely it is to implode the better... I was using Discord until just recently which is why this mess happened lmao

    Becoming myself

It's a bit strange that I've spent days trying to figure out how to write this. It's such a big thing and I want to get that across to y'all, but I never will. So I'm just going to rip off the bandaid and get this out there. Because something amazing happened to me.

2020 Fic Writer Wrap Up · 6:31am Dec 31st, 2020

Saw this floating around Discord and I wasn't getting any writing done anyway so fuck it. Thirty questions, go!

1. What's your favorite kind of fic to write?
Probably obvious, but romantic drama.

2. Which fic of yours was the hardest to write?
Oof... In Quiet Moments was probably the hardest in terms of the actual fic just being a challenge, but while writing Looking Glass I suffered a full on mental break down that spiraled me into suicidal levels of depression and crippled my ability to write for months at a time, so either of those really.

3. Which was the easiest?
Side by Side. The whole thing came about from conception to completion in about 24 hours.

4. Favorite story you've ever written?
Thicker Than Water. Human Shy is my favorite character in WWB and I was in such a good place writing it that I did the whole thing in like a month. When I look back on the month it's just one nonstop writing high.

5. Do you write from start to finish or do you hop around?
I start at the first word of chapter one and end with the final word of the final chapter. There are very few instances where I've ever written anything out of order (the AU sections of Looking Glass were written before the rest of the chapter they appear in, and that's the only instance I can think of).

6. Have you ever deleted a published fic?
Not really, but I've removed the old text and replaced it with new text on By Blood or Choice and to a lesser extent Inner Strength. That was more heavy editing post-publication though.

7. What's the best writing advice you've ever received?
Oh Baphomet, I can't think of anything now... Not to say I haven't had good advice, just... it all slips away when I try to think of it :facehoof:

8. What's the worst?
Don't force it, writing will come when it comes. Basically the kind of advice non-writers give. It might work okay if you only write short stories, but absolutely useless if you write novels.

9. Have you ever collabed with another writer?
My closest collaboration is with Gowak, my writing partner. Generally we workshop all our ideas together, then write them individually, but we each have a fic that the other writes on (I have Torn, Gowak has Three's a Crowd).

10. How many WIPs do you have right now?
I was going to say just one, but that's not entirely true. I have only one active fic that I'm going to be writing (Life in Equestria), but I have a half-written Noodleverse story (Call of the Mountain), a few chapters of an original fantasy novel, and a chapter and a half of an original novella.

11. Story you are most proud of?
Hmm... I would love to say it's Each Small Step, my story about ugly suicidal depression, but that fic has major flaws. Thematically it's my proudest work, but it needs work to really be as good as it could be. So I'm going to say Looking Glass, because I surprised myself with how moving Sunset's story in that fic is and it was the one that made me feel like I could write professionally.

12. Favorite story of another author?
Like, of any story, or fanfic? Either way it's hard to choose. My favorite story all in all might be Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman for teaching me how much of a joy prose can be. My favorite fanfic might be Long Road to Friendship, though I've never finished it, but it taught me the joy of slow burn fanfic and inspired me to write my own story.

13. Best review you've ever gotten?
A fair amount of people have told me they consider Looking Glass to essentially be Sunset's canon origins, or that it fixed the first movie for them. But if I were to single out a specific review, probably this one.

14. Worst review you've ever gotten?
Hmm... I've gotten a lot of meh reviews that bummed me out, but generally when people are really upset with me I find it hilarious. There's a fair amount of bigots in some of my story comments when I had trans or poly stories on the feature board, and some people were livid that Looking Glass wasn't an AU lmao. The ones that upset me the most are the ones that hate on human Fluttershy. They'll compliment my writing and attack my favorite character at the same time :applejackunsure:

15. If you could write the sequel or prequel to a fic currently on AO3 other than your own, which fic would it be?
I wouldn't.

16. Do you reread your own stories?
Well, I wrote them specific to my interests, so hell yeah I do. They're catered for me to be my own biggest fan, after all.

17. Do you want to be published some day?
It's only my biggest dream ever lmao

18. Favorite character to write?
As mentioned above, human Fluttershy.

19. Least favorite character to write?
Discord. I think I've written him pretty well, but he's a major challenge every time he shows up, which is why he'll never show up all that often lol

20. Do you set yourself deadlines or goals?
I set word goals every month, and I have rough deadlines of "finish this story in time to get it on Fimfiction and maintain my update schedule" but if I don't meet those deadlines it is what it is.

21. Name three favorite fic writers.
Gowak, Novel-Idea, and RadiantBeam

22. Is there a trope you've never written, but want to try?
I was literally typing "there's only one bed" but then I remembered I did that in Playing House (and in a non-shipping way, I did it in By Blood or Choice). So not exactly. I've written over a million freaking words, I kinda do the things I want to do lmao

23. Is there a trope you will never write?
Tons, I'm sure. I'm not much of a troper though, so I have a hard time thinking of tropes. That said, I dream of having a WWB section on TV Tropes wink wonk

24. How long have you been a writer?
About 25 years. I wrote my first story at age four, it was a comic about a superhero made of boxes because those were easy to draw. I wrote short stories in early elementary school, and I was encouraged to write more in 4th grade when I was nine. I started writing my first multi-chapter story in middle school, it was about cows taking over the world. I got serious about writing in high school, when I realized I was actually good at it. I gave up shortly after graduation when I realized I couldn't get anyone to read my work and lacked the dedication to write a novel. I picked it up again at age 24 in 2015 when I started writing Inner Strength, determined to take it more seriously than ever and actually learn the craft properly. I've written most days since then.

25. What/who are some influences on your writing?
Neil Gaiman is my favorite writer, so him for sure. Gowak is the one who keeps me on my toes the most, in part because we work so closely. But largely, I'm very influenced by other media. TV shows and video games, especially. I remember watching the end credits of Ocarina of Time and seeing someone credited as writer and realizing a person was in charge of coming up with the stories in my favorite games, and thinking that's what I wanted to do. Then Final Fantasy IX was what got me hella into fantasy.

26. Hardest part of writing?
Figuring out body language and other actions. I'm always impressed with other writers, while mine always feels kina flat to me.

27. Easiest part of writing?
Dialogue, that comes very naturally to me.

28. Best part of writing fanfic?
Not having to world build because fuck that noise lmao

29. Share the plot of a WIP you haven't published yet.
Man I just did that.

30. Tell us something unique you bring to all of your stories!
Depression *finger guns*
