Inspired by Justin Daniel’s story “The Workhorse”.
Coming in from the field, you find yourself being led to the barn by Marble. She has a smile on her face as she leads you to the open doors.
There most of the family can be seen.
“Hello dear.” Ma said giving you a warm smile.
Looking around you can help but wonder at all the decorations about. Holly strewn about the barn rafters, shiny decorations, and lights.
“Hearths-warming?” You ask recalling the holiday being spoken of.
“That’s right.” She smiles at you before presenting you with a sweater. “I had Pinkamena help me get it done on time, I hope you don’t mind her choice in colors.”
It was...interesting to say the least. Salmon and pea green, but the craftsponyship was impeccable. Smiling you proceeded to slide it on. To which it did indeed fit well. Wrapping you up in a woolen embrace.
“Thank you Ma.” You smiled at her.
“Your welcome, son.” She pulled you down and gave you a kiss on your forehead as well as a hug. “We are happy to have you part of the family.”
You smiled back and returned the hug. A knot forming in your chest.
“Marble wha-stop!”
Turning round you almost came nose to nose with Limestone. The mare wearing a stocking cap that was almost as beer red as her face at that moment. Marble having shoved her sister into you giggles as she looks up. Forcing your own gaze up.
A small bouquet of what seemed to be berries and evergreen branches had been hung up on the ceiling above.
Looking at it for a moment you looked back down to Limestone, her own eyes darting from you to the decoration above you both.
Something was familiar about this. All of this really. But you Weren’t sure.
“Heh-heh, yeah he wouldn’t know about that.” Limestone said in a voice that sounded relieved but also a bit...disappointed as she turned her ire to her sister.
Then it clicked. With a smirk you leaned down and took a risk. A BIG risk that might result in you getting your face bucked in. Oh well, you had an ugly sweater to distract from a caved in face.
Limestone went silent as she felt something warm press against her cheek. It was for a moment and when she turned away, the big Doofus was already walking away.
Marble sat there with her eyes wide and mouth open in a shocked smile.
“What are you looking at?!”
