So I wrote one last pony story for the year, Holiday Gig. Y'all should go read it!
I even finished this story a couple days ago, so I got to post it first thing in the morning, whee.
Holiday Gig was kind of a challenge to write, honestly. The prompt was "something with Octavia and Sonata Dusk." Which, generic enough, sure-- it's just that I've never really written Octavia in-depth, and ... I'm honestly not much of a fan of the Dazzlings to begin with. At least Sonata is more interesting than the other two?
Still, I'm kind of glad I got a prompt so outside my wheelhouse, as I never would've written a story like Holiday Gig without it. Plus, since I needed to set up just why two characters who'd never interacted before were hanging out, that meant I had to, well, write more story. Not that a couple thousand words of snappy dialogue aren't fun, but I kind of enjoyed pushing Jinglemas' 'soft limit' for stories. Verbose rebel, I am.
Another interesting thing I found while writing this story was little bits of headcanon. For one, I figured out that Vinyl's family (at least in EQG-iverse) must be loaded. I mean, she's got a transforming car with a couple grand worth of sound equipment in it. In turn, while it's fun to write Octavia as the snooty one, I'm now envisioning her being so devoted to music as a way of earning scholarships for college and stuff. After all, if she were really a snob, she wouldn't be the one playing at a big soiree, she'd be one of the guests. Also I have been told on good authority that classical musicians can party hard when they want to. So, y'know, kind of a promising reversal of the standard 'whacky one/posh one' dynamic that's kind of settled into the fanon. I ... actually could expand that theme into a proper ScratchTavia story, if I really wanted.
I also debated whether or not to have Vinyl scratch talk in the story, but decided it'd be too much of a pain if she didn't. I mean, snappy dialogue is my thing, and it's hard to include said snappy dialogue from only half of a conversation.
But yeah! I've been waiting to post this story ever since I wrapped it up a few days ago. Hope y'all enjoy! And with that out of the way, I can get back to working on some non-pony projects. Maybe even some self indulgent pseudo-fanfic of another stripe entirely! So, y'know, stay tuned and maybe I'll link to that stuff later.
