    Thoughts on Harakiri (1962)

Wow. This was a masterclass in buildup and tension. I knew about Masaki Kobayashi's movie before - a scathing indictment of the samurai and the honor code that they profess to live by - but all the same, watching the movie had me hooked from start to finish. :scootangel:

    Thoughts on Galaxy Quest

Finally getting around to writing up my thoughts on this one. I had heard plenty of good things about it from my parents, though I had yet to see it. Finally, we rung in the new year by watching "Galaxy Quest" with dinner.

I watched Godzilla x Kong yesterday

    And all in all?

It was fun. Good mindless monster mash of a film. Funny how much some of the stuff with Kong in the movie made me think, just a little, of Primal. If only for the lack of dialogue and the importance of character through action and expression.

    Happy Sunday to everybody

Hello all. Just wanted to check in this Sunday (Easter Sunday, for any churchgoing types out there) and wish you all well.

Hope that the year has been okay for everybody. March wasn't the best month for me, I was sick at the start of it and only around the last week have I really felt 100% again, but I'm hoping for things to pick up going forward from here.

    Best wishes, eh?

The Tale of Cu Chulainn · 7:32pm Dec 8th, 2020

Irish mythology combined with rocking metal? Yet another reason for me to love Miracle of Sound.

And that story in particular is EPIC.

You should listen to his Beyond These Walls song, about the game Hades. Not as long, but still damn cool.

I've noticed that song, haven't yet watched it because admittedly I have no familiarity with the game... but what the hell, I'll give it a shot.

It's a Greek Mythos themed Roguelike. Simple enough premise. You are Zagreus, son of Hades. You want to break out of the Underworld. Good fucking luck.

Ahh, I see. Sounds interesting enough, okay. (And also, hey, another friend of mine was talking to me about that game last week, so...)
Yeah, I'll check it out then.

By all means. I've seen enough gameplay that I'm gonna buy it for myself for Christmas. I think my biggest hurdle is getting over my initial frustration due to dying. A lot. Knowing I'm going to need time to improve and actually get good, and get resources to get useful shit is one thing. Having the patience to get there, we'll see how that goes.

I know what you mean about patience. Or frustration with dying in the game. I once tried my hand at Bloodborne, since someone told me it wasn't as horrifically madness-inducingly hard as Dark Souls. Worked at it for about a week, realized I wasn't having nearly as much fun as I'd have liked, and decided that my time and money would be better spent elsewhere.

The most fun I've ever had with a Souls-type game was with Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. Because with that one, while you can still die a lot, it's still got enough exploring and adventuring to make up the difference. (And also, they tweaked the "recover lost XP from the guy who killed you" thing so that instead of having to *kill* said enemy, you just have to hit them once. Boy does that make a world of difference!)

I've never understood the school of thought that seems to go, "torturously hard difficulties are what TRUE gamers should pursue." Why inflict that misery on yourself? Isn't gaming about having fun, first and foremost?

True enough. I must admit that while I'm nowhere near as versed in Irish / Celtic myth as I'd like to be, the story of Setenta / Cu Chulainn is a rousing one. :rainbowdetermined2:

Join the club. I chose to play DOOM 2016 and Eternal on I'm Too Young To Die, but there are those who would swear up, down and sideways that it only counts on Nightmare/Ultra Nightmare.

Way I see it is simple. If YOU want to play it on the hardest difficulty, go right ahead. Knock yourself out. I will start on the lowest difficulty, and if I want to go higher, I will. And if I don't want to play on X or Y mode, I simply won't do it. Don't give me shit about my gaming choices, I won't give you shit about yours.

They actually wanted to include an extra bit regarding a spear he has... that's literally the definition of TO THE PAIN.

I worry about the mental health of those people.

Don't give me shit about my gaming choices, I won't give you shit about yours.

Couldn't agree more.

Join the club. I'll grant you there's people who can do insane shit on those difficulties, and if they enjoy being oneshot by an Imp, more power to them, but I do not.
