A Most Unusual Music Blog · 5:13am Nov 24th, 2020

Howdy folks! First and foremost, as always, Adorable Applejack:

Best Sisters don't @ me

Now then...

You may be asking yourself exactly why this is a "most unusual" music blog. Well, thats' because it is a Jake The Army Guy music post... WITH NO METAL!!!

I know, I know. Dogs and cats living together, mass hystaria. However, contrary to what you may think, I was not, in fact, born making the devil horns and wearing a bullet belt. I loved my mom too much for that. No, like most kids,I was a musical blank slate. Now yeah, from birth to about 8 or so, you may like music, but you generally like whatever it is your parents are playing. It's not until later that you begin to explore music on your own. So yeah, up until age eleven, I listened to whatever my mom played in the car. And to this day, a lot of that old music I still really like, some of them even beyond simple nostalgia.

Now, it wasn't all gold. Even as a seven year old, I knew that Michael Bolton and Bary Manilow sucked. But a lot of it was 80's rock/pop: Billy Joel, Elton John, etc. However, most of it was country, since as I likely have no need to remind you, I was born and raised in Texas. And to this day, every other blue moon or so, I'll bump some Reba or Garth. It's not really that shocking when you think about it. Both country and metal use guitars, bass, and drums, there are some form of solos, being it guitar or fiddle/banjo. It mainly comes down to Stratocaster of Telecaster. Incidentally, this is where I first learned that "icky girls" could make great music. Hey, I was seven, leave me alone.

Fair warning, there;s gonna be a lot, as I am now if a full on nostalgia vortex. So, I thought it might be fun to showcase some of those oldies but goldies from my childhood, and show it's not all about Satan and murder. Just mainly...

Technically a metal reference because the line "Heavy metal suicide" refers to either the Ozzy Osbourne Suicide Solution trial of the Judas Priest Better By You, Better Than Me trial

Yes, I am using this one. I feel this is the definitive version of the song. One of the very few worthwhile things Fallout 76 gave us.

Surely you saw this coming? and fuck Ford Chevy 4 lyfe yo

My mom is 65, so yeah, we're going old school

This is the country music version of "Basic Bitch"

Because of course we end with this one.

But despite it all, The Metal never dies...

I was never much of a country fan, but my first year of college, my roommate listened to not much else, and we played cards with a couple other guys who also did. Then I met my future wife, and she listened to not much else.

Suffice it to say I'm familiar with pretty much all those songs. Wifey still loves to sing that "Love on the Auction Block" one.

I do love me some 90s country. Most of these are on my playlists.

Have you seen the Ken Burns documentary, Country Music? It ends with this crowd in your post here, but I was kind of in the dark about country music history, and it was a really fun watch.

... Sweet Jesus, it's my horror time in Texas playlist. Don't even think of @in' me Jake. I used to live in Texas too! I'll be honest, I could never really get into Country. It was always so damn depressing... Says the Orleans Soul, Jazz, Blues, an' I'm talkin' 'bout that deep Mississippi Delta Blues, and Blue Grass enthusiast. But I won't begrudge others for it! I mean hell, I listen to the Dead South and let's face it. They're a pretty crazy lot on their own.

Also, you missed one Jake:

Callin Baton Rouge is my go to country karaoke song and it slaps every time without fail.

No, but I shall go look for it!

Like I said, I liked this stuff from when my mom played it as I was growing up. So while I do enjoy some, it's mainly just this era of late-80's/early-to-mid-90's country that I dig. And even then, not all of it.

I've been told by dedicated country fans that trying to sing Friends In Low Places at karaoke is the country equivalent of playing Enter Sandman or Smoke On the Water in a guitar store. No one is going to stop you, but they will judge you very harshly.

Take Me Home, Country Roads

I like Serj's version...

Ever hear Justin Johnson?

5403969 My roommate in college had one record he loved to play over and over. "Convoy" by CW McCall. I developed a nervous twitch.

Thankfully, I recovered enough to write an entire pony story based on country music recently, but it was close.
