    Seashell: getting closer to print!

Here's where we are on the Seashell print book:
83 pages all told, including front matter and a preface. 75 of them so far are story. Anticipating about 10-20 more pages to be finished. Almost there!
Cover's done (for the hardcover edition dust-jacket, at least, will probably have to be redone for the paperback but whatever).

    Jinglemas 2023, done!

I wrote this thing for Penguifyer, and today is my assigned day to deliver the gift, so I guess this is when the story drops:

    TLost
Twilight, on her new wings, couldn't find her way around Cloudsdale. It may have left more of mark on her than she wants to admit. Written for Jinglemas 2023.

I hope they enjoy it, and I hope all of you will too!

    Seashell: The Book™: progress report

I'm pleased to be able to say progress is being made, although to temper the good news, it hasn't been entirely easy.

    Jinglemas 2023!

Do you like Secret Santa exchanges? Do you like stories? Do you wish there was a way to combine the two into some sort of abominable Frankenstein amalgamation of a holiday season tradition? Well, there is!

Due to crossed wires and unforeseen circumstances... · 1:15pm Nov 21st, 2020

I now have not one, not two, but three (3) ducks in my possession.

No, they're not alive. That would make things way more exciting. Probably a little too exciting, really, knowing ducks.

They're quite dead, and frozen. One's thawing in the fridge.

You may be wondering how a FimFic writer, or anyone, ends up with a trio of duck corpses. Okay, see, this all starts last Monday... no, that's not quite it. Actually, this all starts about four years ago. I was facing, yet again, the prospect of a Thanksgiving without any family[1], so, you know - cooking my own dinner. I'd really never bothered doing anything in previous years I was on my own, simply because I'm not enough of a fan of turkey to go through the troublesome song-and-dance production of cooking one. But that year it dawned on me that you don't gotta have turkey just 'cause it's Thanksgiving. There's plenty of other moderately-exotic-feeling special occasion meats that aren't too much hassle to obtain and cook. So, hey, I haven't had duck before. I decided I'll try that. A few YouTube videos later, I concocted my own version of a recipe for roasted orange duck (or canard à l’orange if I spoke Fancy, but I don't, so... yeah, orange duck) and it turned out pretty good! Good enough that roasting a duck became my personal Thanksgiving tradition from then on.

Aaaaaanyway, you probably see roughly the direction this is headed. Fast-forward to last Monday. I'm tryin' to figure out how to get a duck in the era of Covid. I didn't want to go out shopping (obvi), but you know what? These people right here, they gotcha covered. Easy peasy, very reasonable shipping cost. So I ordered a pair of whole ducks, because it worked out to the same shipping as just ordering one. I can just keep the spare one frozen for, I dunno, roasting for Christmas or whatever.

Meanwhile, at the very moment I was online in the comfort of home, ordering said pair of ducks...

My roommate was not. Knowing of the above Thanksgiving tradition, and being out shopping anyway, he chanced across a market that had frozen whole ducks in stock. He bought one, anticipating I would want one, since he's cool like that. When he came home, I told him, "Hey good news. I actually found reasonably priced ducks online. I bought a pair of them."

He just gave me a look and facepalmed, then started laughing as he pulled one out of his shopping bags.

So that's the story. I just thought you should know, because seriously, who accidentally ends up with extra ducks?! :twilightoops:

I keep thinking about this because it's one of those stories that just kinda happens to you and has enough "okay, that was weird" and "welp, that's the zaniness of life" simultaneously to make for a good fanfic in some capacity. No, probably not just a verbatim version of this exact story, at least not with ponies... but some sort of loose adaptation or a "based on" thing, or something.

Write what you know, they say.

...Well, I know I have three ducks.

So here we are.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone! Stay safe, stay healthy, and stay grateful for the good things you have. Like ducks. And orange sauce. And tasty side dishes. And good stories to read. And, most of all, for each other. Love to all of you!

[1] By "without any family," I just mean it's geographically infeasible to get together with them just for a Thanksgiving dinner. My family are all wonderful people and I love them so much, so this isn't some sad story (I mean, sad for me, when I get lonely, I guess... but not like estrangement or tragedy-befell-my-loved-ones kinda sad, so it's all good).

Not if you're a hunter. Which I'm not, but surely there's got to be someone on this site that is.

...I'd like to try cooking duck, though. I think I'll bookmark that site. Thanks and Happy Thanksgiving!

Maybe you can prepare all three and give two to a homeless shelter?

It's always good to have more (at least sometimes!) and to have a bounty in these times is a pleasant surprise. It sounds like you have much to be thankful for and we're all glad that you're healthy and here with us.

Happy Thanksgiving, Winston!

A happy Thanksgiving to you too, and to the commenters here who celebrate it. :)

It's always a good time when you end up with extra ducks, alive or dead.

Celestia, now I'm craving Peking duck, don't want to go out for it, and don't know any place in my delivery area that does it. Although there is a Sichuan place nearby that does tea-smoked duck...

I found out the wife bought an 8 quart pressure cooker some time ago so I got it out and have been playing with it. Too small for our turkey but maybe a small chicken would fit hmmmmm.

I now have not one, not two, but three (3) ducks in my possession.

Pity one of them wasn't a goose.

I know, right?!

Seriously, I've been wanting to try cooking a goose for years now, but I just can't find one for a non-ridiculous price.

So as far as your chances of cooking geese are concerned... your goose is cooked. :trollestia:

No, they're not alive. That would make things way more exciting.

Well this had the potential to be a lot darker! I was initially much more excited about the blog title and here's where things kind of went :twilightoops: Hehe. Enjoy your thanksgiving :)

Hah, I have my own thrown-together recipe for orange duck! I haven't made it in years, but maybe this Christmas it'll be finally be time. Enjoy your thanksgiving.
