Story Notes: Unity 2 (part 2)

If you got here without reading the previous blog post or Unity 2 you're gonna be confused. Just scroll through for the pony pics, or maybe skim it in the hopes of finding a useful horse fact.

I promised you Silver Apples and you're gonna get Silver Apples. No, that's not a pony, but it sounds like it could be.

    Missing: Hobo Shoestring

I don't have the reach that a lot of YouTubers do, but I've got some railfans in my readership and probably some people who live in Tennessee . . .

Hobo Shoestring was an inspiration for Destination Unknown, and he's gone missing. Southern RailFan is leading a search effort at a lake he liked near his house; here's a video if you want details or think you might want to help:

Signal Boost: Auto-Modesty Deficiency Syndrome · 12:58am Oct 30th, 2020

I probably don’t have to do this one, seeing as how it’s at the top of the feature box, but Raugos mentioned my contest in the story description, so . . .

TAuto-Modesty Deficiency Syndrome
According to ponies, all humans have a disorder.
Raugos · 2.1k words  ·  918  12 · 9.9k views

It doesn’t quite fit the contest proper, but that’s okay; we’ve got a category for ‘close.’

The story covers a bit of headcanon regarding, as FoME puts it, “the groinal veil” (Piers Anthony referred to it as the ‘adult conspiracy’, IIRC) and and how a pony’s modesty is different than a human’s modesty. Tastefully, I hasten add.

It also has what is probably an important lesson when it comes to world-hopping or even more mundane travel to different nations (as if you can do that now) . . . different cultures have different rules and understandings and symbolism and so on, and maybe it’s best to not jump to conclusions.

Fact is, I’ve seen this headcanon a few times and while it’s not one I personally consider (this is more my interpretation), it is an interesting premise and is certainly more show-accurate than my interpretation.

(Piers Anthony referred to it as the ‘adult conspiracy’, IIRC)

The 'Adult Conspiracy To Keep Interesting Things From Children' is primarily* focused on keeping knowledge of how to summon the stork (keep in mind that this literally summons a stork and generally the only requirements are animate and living) away from children too young/not ready for that**.

* other important parts of the conspiracy include not letting children hear swears by magically changing the words to bleeps and not letting children get sick by keeping candy away from them.
** Centaurs notably are the only humanoid species that do not participate in The Adult Conspiracy and generally reproduce the mundane way, even having standard sex education. In one instance a young centaur taught this to two human teenagers and all three immediately decided to join The Adult Conspiracy.

..unfortunately, looking not at 'stated goals' of childrising but actual result ...I think even double-facepalm will be nowhere near enough to describe my disappointment.

I enjoyed reading that story and really dig the idea of Modesty. To the point where I'm seriously contemplating stealing shamelessly borrowing it for my own writing (for those situations where it might become relevant in a story)

Hm, thanks. :)

Ah, yes, thank you. Been a few years since I’ve read any of the Xanth novels (and by a few years, I’m sure I’ve read one or two of them this century. . . .

Really? I don’t remember the candy bit.

Heh, those silly centaurs and their lack of modesty. :derpytongue2:

Disappointment in the ‘adult conspiracy’?

It’s not personally my cup of tea, but that’s okay. I have seen it used in a more serious story, as well:

“’"Well, Twilight, as you can see, this creature is most definitely a female. Seems like its passive magic, that would normally cover its genitals like every other living thing, has failed.’”

Disappointment in how little humans interested (able?) to actually do something even about our gravest problems .. So, you are told to both 'think about everything' and 'look other way'. And 'look other way' is winning (when it comes to problems!)

5390999
Oh, yeah . . . well, we suck. I think about that sometimes, and it makes me sad. Back in the day, they decided that to stop Chicago from flooding, they’d just lift the entire downtown up with jacks. If only we’d apply that kind of thinking to some modern problems.

But there are people doing good things, maybe not big things, but good things.
