On biweekly updates · 5:41am Oct 28th, 2020
So first off, thanks to everyone who read, commented on, and thumbs-upped Acts of Love; it's still on the front page (though it's slipped off the feature board when mature is turned on) for a couple days now, which I did not expect at all. So thank you, it's great to have this kind of reception so far into the series, and it makes me feel better about the future, which I was worried about. It felt like every successive WWB fic would be less popular than the last until I fizzled out, so this was a boost I needed.
I also want to talk about the biweekly updates that I keep forgetting to actually address in a blog. I mentioned them in the author's note of the story, but only that they're happening. So yeah, there will be another update tomorrow, and every Wednesday and Sunday until it's finished. Basically I decided to do this because I was unhappy with how long it took me to tell Thicker Than Water, a story I had finished completely before ever publishing chapter one. I blogged about that at the time, debating what to do about future stories, and I decided on biweekly.
But this story took seven months to write, and currently I'm not even writing pony. I actually wrote a five-chapter novella called Coda that will be published after Acts of Love is over, but aside from that it's extremely unlikely I'll have another story written, edited, and ready to go after Coda is finished. I've been publishing every week since April 2019 across several different stories. I'll have regular updates until as late as February 14 2021 (if I publish Coda weekly instead of biweekly) but after that, man, I doubt it. It's not impossible, but I'll consider it a good thing if I'm even writing the next story by then.
So yeah, I decided to do this knowing it would mean an end to my regular update streak. I could pull it off if I were going and writing the next horse fic for NaNo, but I'm trying to write an original novel instead. Conservative estimates say that I'll be working on that for November and December, most likely January and maybe February too. Could easily be longer. It took me seven months to write Acts of Love, who knows how long it'll take to do an original novel (granted, Acts of Love was a unique challenge due to the parent theme and sinking into horrible depression for a few months...)
On the other hand, I wrote Thicker Than Water in like a month and a few extra days. So I can crank out words if I'm in the zone, so really nothing's impossible. But at this point, I'm saying do not expect regular updates to follow Coda. Nothing will interrupt Acts of Love and Coda, but future stories will take some time. And I plan on that being the way I do things from now on. I'll write a story in full, then publish it at a biweekly pace (shorter stories like Coda may get published weekly, it depends on what my output at the time is, but I dislike taking months and months to tell one novel), and there will be pauses of however long I need in between stories. I think this is the best plan for everyone, me and you readers.
It's a little sad to say goodbye to this weekly update streak, especially knowing I could keep it up if I wasn't doing this biweekly experiment. Something needed to change though, and I think this is the way to go.
I also figured what the hell, while I'm here I'd give you a little teaser of what's to come. Here's a look at all the chapter titles and lengths so you can speculate on what might be coming if you're into that sort of thing.
The whole story is 137,524 words, since I know you're probably curious
And just for fun, I'll share a little cut piece. I was originally going to write chapter one of Acts of Love from Sunset's POV, and I got two paragraphs into it before my friend and proofreader Sapphire convinced me to write it from Morning's POV instead since she's poised to be the main character. So here's the cut part of that chapter. It's not much, but it did also make a decent opening (the prologue didn't exist at the time, so this was meant to open the story by itself)
Out of all the things that could change from marrying Twilight and Fluttershy, Sunset never imagined that being increasingly unsure of what to wear would be one of them. Even after years of living in Equestria, Sunset had never shaken the habit of wearing clothes everywhere she went. But still, she usually wasn’t that picky about what she actually was wearing.
But ever since she got married, there were two options for official events, and she was never sure which was appropriate. Did she dress as the Captain of the Twilit Guard, her official title that was still sure to garner respect? Or did she wear her crown and go as Princess Sunset, a title that was still highly controversial?
From there, she was going to dress as a princess and go to Small Steps and things would've gone over similar to how they did just from Sunset's POV. I'm glad I made the change, Sapph was right (as she usually is in the few times she's spoken up about making changes to the story).
