"Heat Death for Two:" Afterthoughts · 2:31pm Oct 21st, 2020

Here are my short four-paragraph afterthoughts on Heat Death for Two. Spoilers, of course.

The setting was inspired by having the end of the universe as the main location/timespan: there was a Doctor Who episode that took place there (which I've never watched) along with being very loosely inspired by ScottTrek's Heat Death (though I've never read it at all).

This story's seed sprouted, however, when I came upon this matter: if Alice can see to the future and can also give gifts, what does she do when she reaches the last gift to be ever given? And then what? This set me on a more Alice-focused path before further introspection (and help from my pre-reader) brought me to having Alice be the visitor while having an original character as the story's P.O.V.

The story ended up becoming an unintentional spiritual successor to Belshazzar when it comes to theme and Christian undertones. However, I see it as the other side of a coin: whereas Belshazzar is a dark and brooding tragedy, Heat Death for Two is more bittersweet.

It also touches upon my one other inspiration for the story: Ben H. Winters' The Last Policeman trilogy (which I haven't read at all—a running theme for this story's inspirations). The thought of a policeman trying to solve a crime when a meteor is going to destroy Earth within a year or so struck a chord in me. I never really figured out why he went on with it (even after hyper-skimming TV Tropes articles on the trilogy), so I've decided to bring in my own reasoning for Alice's gift-giving to the end: because it's good. And I think it is a good lesson for us all: that we should strive to do good because it is good: not just unconditional love but also unconditional benevolence—something that forms the bedrock of true friendship.

Edit: "If my current and/or upcoming stories interest you, then you can show your support by buying me a coffee. I am somewhat stingy, so rest easy knowing I'll put much of it towards savings and important expenses."

And that would be all for now! Hope to see you soon, and may you have a good day ahead!
