So this episode was the first "Halloween special" for the show. A lot of cartoons usually have seasonal Christmas and Halloween, and even Thanksgiving episodes. But what made this different was the holiday which they replaced Halloween with "Nightmare's Night" in FIM and used it more as a background to the main events instead of having the holiday be the central focus of the episode. Here we explore the character of Luna for the first time since we saw her in the first two episodes. Being pretty much gone for a thousand years realistically she shouldn't even be able to communicate with the other ponies let alone be able to understand their customs. So I'm glad to see that she even uses what is known as the "royal Canterlot voice." as a way to address her subjects and has no concept of "fun." I honestly wished there were more moments in the episode because I felt the whole message of her "being scary is actually fun." kind of a letdown. Yeah, Luna had to understand that Nightmare's Night was more about having fun through being scary but I kind of wished she was able to get to know Twilight and her friends more to understand her better. She is definitely one of the most underutilized characters in the show and at the very least this episode again introduced us to her as an actual character. But overall I think it simply could've done a better job of that.
Definitely true. The reason why we barely got any Luna content in Season One was because the people at Hasbro thought that she was actually still a villain, despite the fact that the series premiere had her being redeemed. I fail to understand corporate logic when they are trying to dictate the actions within a show that is designed to help promote their products and manages to grow its own fandom beyond their target demographic as it has.
