So, given that Lower Decks is part of Star Trek canon, we can all agree that Q actually is Discord at this point, right?
Forget not that I am a derp.

I'm not seeing a connection between Q and Discord?

Huh?
I thought it was public knowledge at this point. They have the same voice actor/actor, and I'm fairly certain Discord was actually modeled after Q, though I don't remember if we have official information on that.
((to Fan: ah yes, Lower Decks, that thing I need to watch.))
-GM, master of inks.
Ha, probably.
I'm sorry, but this show is just... painfully unfunny. "Hey, let's make a less funny version of Rick & Morty, throw in some Family Guy like montages and cutaways, and slap a thin Star Trek veneer on it! We can't lose!"
Or at least some aspect of him.
Is there some more... linear way to watch that show, other than YouTube? The playlist on that channel seems to be assembled from random clips in no particular order.
Edit: Oh, $%#! It's CBS All Access. No, thanks.

The script apparently called for a John de Lancie impersonator, but the first season did well enough that they opted to risk asking the real deal. As subtlety goes, this leans more towards the "African equine witch doctor who speaks entirely in rap, debut episode is about racism" end of the scale rather than the "character named Cadence (misspelled so we can copyright it) isn't what she appears to be, musical score contains deceptive cadence" end.
EDIT: the deleted comment had me having screwed up the tagging of previous commenters, and the notifications don't account for edits.
I wait until we see a Fluttershy expy before making my decision.

Thin? This show has more consistent respect for continuity than any of the current live action shows amd most of the classic ones.
Also, this show has nothing to do with Rick and Morty. Rick and Morty is either a celebration of or sarcastic argument for nihilism and Lower Decks is Star Trek but the characters aren't expected to be a superhuman ideal.
Eh, my first exposure to Q was in the Peter David novel Q-squared, which outline the Q Continuum as the guardians of order. Trelane's decent into High-School nihilism in that book was portrayed as chaotic.
We‘ve all known that Q was Discord. They’re just too similar in power, mannerisms, & personality for there to be any doubt.

I find myself not wanting to risk watching it. Just the idea of Star Trek being played solely for laughs is very unpalatable to me. The setting in general doesn’t support sitcom style stories imo.

I recommend wcostream.com (formerly called https cartoononline.io). They have a list for Lower Decks. I really recommend the show!
Off topic: Eh. Lower Decks is okay. It’s not as awful as the modern Trek stuff. But it does seem... rather pathetic, when compared to DS9 or something.
On topic: As a joke or amusing ponder, I guess Discord being Q is fine. But I don’t seriously consider it anything more than an actor reference and an homage.
this might be a hot take but i actually think Lower Decks is great
Q for real is Discord, though
My favorite part of Lower Decks is the Go to Warp catchphrase they keep trying out.
"Ensign, give me a warp factor of 5, 6, 7, 8--"
*Smooth jazz.
Well of course, but that was already common knowledge. What we learned from Lower Decks is that the true face of the spirit of Harmony is a smiling koala, and he is disturbing.
5373661 It's not solely played for laughs, there's also some interesting character growth on the part of the junior officers. It is mostly played for laughs though.
Also, why does Q always go on about testing "humanity" when not everyone being tested is a human?
5373951
Because Q is horribly, horribly speciesist.
5373956
<Discord> Yona! Eaten any good books lately?
5373962
Please don't feel compelled now to tell me the story of "The Boy Who Cried 'Worf ...“
As someone who barely knows anything about Star Trek but has seen some clips especially about Q from The Next Generation, the Q in this clip sounds extremely like Discord. Given that it's really John de Lancie voicing him this time around and that it's not too long since his last time voicing Discord, I think the similarity is very much satisfied.
And the scene pretty much reminds me of the Discord timeline from the Season 5 finale. Makes the resemblance even more uncanny.

I didn't want to respond to this until I had more than YouTube clips to go off of. I ended up binging the whole season, so mission accomplished there.
Suffice to say, I'm going to have to disagree with every point you presented. But hey, not like I'm going to hold a gun to your head and force you to watch more. I can see how people wouldn't like the show. There are definitely some awkward stretches that can be painful to watch.

The Federation has resort planets. Q has a resort universe.
5373617
The only issue there is finding a Fluttershy in a quasi-military organization looking to brave the unknown and meet strange new civilizations. If they focused on the strange new non-sapient species, then we'd have a better chance of getting one.
5373648
Let's not forget that the de Lancie Q is basically the friend who no one likes. He's been cast out of the Continuum at least once and is generally thought of as a troublemaker. In other words, the touch of chaos that keeps the order from calcifying. (Well, up until that other Q decided to die, sparking a civil war... but Voyager got really weird down the line.)

Every member of the Enterprise's bridge crew is at least half-human, excepting Data, who wants to be human, and Worf, who was raised by them. There, it kind of works. For the Cerritos, given how Q already gave humanity a pass by that point, he was either bored or playtesting for the next time Spike let him lead an O&O session. Or both.
Honestly, I need to find a site with Lower Decks fanfiction so I can get my Tendiford Shipping Fix.
5374213 Yeah, I remember seeing that weird amalgamation of different sports and games in the chaos dimension he created (and boy did that seem like a Discord homage) and thinking "Q's just phoning it in, isn't he?"
I wonder if Discord will ever apologize for bringing the Smooze to his resort universe in the TOS era, since it almost ate Kirk's Enterprise?
5373567
Huh, I've been laughing like a hyena at every episode. For me it's way better than Rick and Morty tbh, and I generally like it too (then again I thought "Pickle Rick" was the worst episode of that show, tho haven't watched the last season yet.) Humor is extremely subjective, for sure.
I unironically love this show.
