2020 is the year of Murphy.
Everything that can go wrong has gone wrong. First, this pesky pandemic barged in and made itself at home. Thousands have died. Millions more have lost their jobs. Most everything fun: conventions, arcades, museums, are either closed or replaced by cheap virtual substitutes. Meetings, sermons, and the like have been replaced with Zoom meetings; a cheap substitute for human interaction. Even the act of shaking someone's hand has become a game of Russian Roulette.
As if that wasn't enough, once things actually started to calm down a little, Geroge Floyd was killed on camera, and the BLM movement returned with a vengeance. This in itself wasn't bad; most of the resulting protests have been relatively peaceful. They've been hijacked by looters who see the protests as a way to smash and grab everything that isn't nailed down, the anarchists who destroy for the sake of destroying.
Any other time, this alone would have made for a chaotic year. But that's not enough for 2020. No, it has to go the extra mile when it comes to chaos. For instance, Beirut has been virtually leveled by an exploding warehouse. Our president continues to be an absolute moron (no surprise there).colonies of Asian Hornet (or as I like to call them "Hell Hornets") have been found in my home state of Washington. Fake news spreads across the Internet like a second pandemic (again, no surprise there).
Oh, and before I forget, most of the west coast is on fire. As I write this, the air in my home town would put Beijing to shame. Everything is filtered through a brownish-yellow haze of woodsmoke. The breeze through my bedroom window brings the alkaline, resiny smell of burning wood.
And we still have a little over three months to go.
God help us all.
