Five Hundred Little Murders: the full audiobook production · 4:21pm Sep 11th, 2020

...wow.

There are two things to know about having Scribbler create a reading of your work: it's one of the site's highest honors, and you generally receive no warning. So for me, this is the rarest case: not only is it the third time she's turned to one of my stories (Jury Duty and Customer Disservice), but because she posts notices to her YouTube followers, I had about half a day of waiting for the recording to drop. BrumbyRun put the notification on my own userpage, and then it was a lot of reloading comments on the notice post.

Naturally, because Scribbler has six digits of YouTube followers and I'm locally around 2k, pretty much no one in those comments knew who I was. (This is normal. As I will continue to tell people, fanfiction"horsefame" grants the right to stand in any convention line you want. At the back.) And some of those who only had the notice for their first impression took one look at the title and decided it was a grimdark story.

Well, they're in for a minor surprise...

So. I haven't listened to the production yet. This is due to temporal difficulties, also known as 'When I started writing this blog, the reading had gone up eight minutes prior and it's nearly an hour and a half long.' But I did note the presence of multiple reader names in the cover art, which seems to indicate either people taking turns (see 'nearly an hour and a half') or a full casting call -- and according to the fine details, it's the latter. This is... more than anyone's done with one of my stories before this, and it's part of why having Scribbler tap your shoulder is among the site's highest honors.

Once this blog goes up, we'll basically all be listening together.

Also, in case you missed it, I did just say 'cover art'.

Now. I linked to Scribbler's main channel above: in case you missed it, here's that link again, and here's one for her FIMFic page. If you like her work, remember to upvote and subscribe. If you really like her work, this link goes to her Patreon page, and this one is for her Ko-Fi tip jar.

I'm also aware that there may be a few people who find their way to this blog from YouTube after listening to the audio production. So to those of you who may be completely new here...

...hi.

Sorry about that.

I do work in genres other than Sad. There's a pretty extensive catalog to pick and choose from. If you feel up to it, you can look at your discretion, or ask anyone in/through the blog Comments (presuming we get some) for their recommendations. And If you happen to wind up really liking my work, I have my own Patreon and Ko-Fi accounts -- but you can always just, y'know, read. Or not. It's entirely your choice.

So to close this out... once again, thank you, to Scribbler, Illya Leonov, Jessie Borgman, Caitbug, and Wuten. I don't know how to pay this back. I would appreciate some hints on paying it forward.

And now... the audiobook.

Let's listen.

That's surprising to me. I'd have thought the author would be asked their permission before a reading was recorded, just out of courtesy if nothing else. But yeah, congrats!

"There's a Corvette in my driveway. With a ribbon wrapped around it. And a receipt which says the car is fully paid for, along with the taxes and a few years of insurance. Plus a full tank of gas."

"So? No one told you they were going to give you a Corvette. I'm sending it back!"

...no.

With my own 'verse, my main objection is having other people write within it -- unsupervised. Anyone who wants to tell a story set in the local distortion had better let me know what they're doing, mostly because that gives me the chance to talk them out of it. However, I've let people borrow my OCs before this, and been permitted loans in turn. I just don't want anyone casually saying 'And the 'verse works this way now.'

But when it comes to readings, I've never minded, because that's the transfer of an extant story to a different medium. Also, an audiobook isn't exactly casual. It takes major effort to put on this kind of production, and I do regard it as an honor for my work to be perceived as worthy of the time and coordination involved.

There may be authors who would want to be told before that kind of project ever started. But as far as I'm concerned?

Wow. Free Corvette.
Someone has to really like what you did in order to give you a Corvette...

Dang. Congratulations!

I haven’t listened to the whole thing, but I did listen to the start and the end (hey, I know the story, so I wasn’t spoilering myself).

There is a dedication at the end to her own dog. The themes of that story are universal.

Congratulations Estee, and thank you Scribbler. I’ll be sure to listen to the whole thing when I have time.

I'm suprised it took her so long to do it. I know shr was planning it a couple years ago... Can't wait until I get off work.

Congratulations, Estee!

I've never, ever been excited about an audio reading that wasn't for one of my own stories.

Until now.

And there we go.

Wow. I prefer the GrimDarks

To be fair: his next comment was that Scribbler's closing credits reminded him of his boxer's passing. So this may just be 'GrimDark has less personal impact.'

Update: StraightToThePointStudios did a reading for Assigned Paperwork at Birth.

.....decided it was a grimdark story.

Well, they're in for a minor surprise...

Don't be so modest. It's one of YOUR saddest stories -they ain't that wrong.

I saw the teaser notice pop up on Youtube yesterday - all I can really say is congratulations, Estee. It's well-earned for an absolutely amazing piece.

...okay? I wasn't trying to imply that they did anything wrong or this wasn't a welcome surprise. Just registering my own lack of knowledge on how these things go.

"hugs you in congratulations"

Scribbler and co are 47 shades of Awesomesauce. Grats!

Congratulations, Estee. :)

Congratulations.

I expect the grimdarks hurt less.

Awesome. I'm glad to hear about it. I'll check it out sometime. It's good to see your work get some appreciation.

Woo! It's like how rock stars say they know they've made it when Werid Al parodies them.

I finally got round to listening to this. I wish I hadn't.

I miss my murderfloofs.
