State of the Scribe: April 2024

You know what they say about the best laid plans? I'll be real brief with this update, for reasons that will be self-evident.

State of the Scribe: February 2024

Another month, albeit the shortest of the year. I still haven't had a chance to get into the process side of my writing and write that detailed plan for the year, been too busy writing a novel. Guess that's a good problem to have.

This is exactly the 71st month I've posted a patreon calendar. Almost but not quite six years of writing fanfic, sharing all these ideas with you that would otherwise stay trapped in my head. I couldn't begin this post, and the beginning of a new year without expressing my profound thanks to everyone who keeps supporting me. Your help, big or small, is the only reason I'm still able to write

New Story: The First Willowbrook Christmas!

Hey pones! A Merry Christmas to those who celebrate! Last year I wrote a short story for the holiday, but the editing pushed it back for a little while. For those who enjoyed Sisters of Willowbrook, I have a story for you to check out! The final chapter will get posted tomorrow:

Hey everyone, these months are getting really fully again. Every month I think maybe I'll have tapered things off enough to relax, but that hasn't happened yet. Granted, we've got a pokemon story in there tilting things a bit, but that should hopefully get finished up quick with as fast as I write it.

Before I go into the usual updates, I have a question for everyone who bothers to read these blogs:

As we reach the gradual sunset of MLP: FIM, I'd like to transition to writing some other things in addition to ponies. Would you care about reading those things, or would you prefer I not include them in my blog here? If you care enough to make your voice heard, take a second and vote in the strawpoll:

https://www.strawpoll.me/20866547

Just because these other stories aren't about ponies doesn't mean they wouldn't share much in common with the writing many know me for around here. I tend to focus on science fiction and urban fantasy, with elements of TF/TG popping up far more often than they probably should.

For example, I'm finishing up a short story about a guy who gets accidentally changed into a dozen fairies (at the same time). And of course there's the story Mew Like Me, which is just more fanfiction, but also has some of the same stuff involved. And I'm nearly done with a Message in a Bottle universe original novel about a Forerunner colony on a subzero orphan planet and the adaptations humans have to make to survive there.

Basically I'd like to take a read on if I should share information about these projects here, or if you guys would think it was spammy and that I should keep it down. Some of you (particularly those on my Discord), know that I also write as my dayjob, and that tends to not be close enough to my "core audience" for me to consider it worth sharing. But do you want to learn about my projects that are similar to what you've read? Vote or comment with what you think.

Alright, returning to our usual scheduled programming. Nothing too crazy happening with this month's chapters. The usual suspects are still trucking, with Hour and Child of Mine approaching some sort of conclusion. My plan would be for both of these stories to complete by the end of the year, though I'd favor taking longer if telling the best possible story takes longer.

Mew Like Me is harder to predict, since it's being written so incredibly fast for how simple an idea it is. I think I'm about halfway through, so maybe it will finish around the end of the year too. I can dream. For those who don't know, it's a pokemon TF story that I'm posting to my Patreon--but you don't need to support me to read it. Just visit and look for the tag and you can see all the chapters: https://www.patreon.com/user?u=3226653&filters[tag]=Mew%20Like%20Me . It also has a cover now, which is awesome:

Big news this month is a new oneshot: Armor Gleaming Bright. Yes it's about who you think it is. I really don't know how I haven't written a story about her yet, given how many other stories in that vein I've done. But when I got the commission I couldn't resist, so here we are. Probably could've been a whole novel, but I think there are other stories on the same subject, so... I'll not tread on too many toes.

You'll also notice a minific on that list. I don't actually have enough to write it yet, but I promised I'd do it this month if I get the rest of the details, so I put it on here in case the pone of the hour gets back to me. You know who you are. If not, we still have almost a full month of updates there, so I won't feel too bad.

You know, you could always create an Archive of Our Own account if you want to make none mlp stuff with out using Fanfiction. It’ll be easier to read and follow then using a Patron.

P.S, The only reason I know you don’t like Fanfiction is because you said so on your first chapter of the Mew TF story. Yep, gonna read it.

I know of a site you could post Mew Like Me on.

Apparently, there's another pan-fandom writing site in early alpha at the moment, Offprint. I haven't taken a detailed look myself, but it might work well for your other stories.

I was hinting at that, but didn’t want to link to it unless Starscribe was interested in case I annoyed him.

Kind of sad when you talk about sunsetting pony. I am interested in knowing about the other works but I would read a smaller percentage of them. I did read things before pony existed and currently have tiamat's wrath checked out of the library and am waiting on the fourth book in the bobiverse.

I am hoping gen 5 will be more for"us" than pony life turned out to be.

Just don't take this as me saying that I'm done with pony tomorrow or anything. But without any more G4 content, it's only a matter of time before I run out of things that inspire me. I've already written over four million words, I know I won't last for another 4 million. But writing itself is my greatest joy, so I know I'll never stop. I'll just write about other stuff.

I tend to focus on science fiction and urban fantasy, with elements of TF/TG popping up far more often than they probably should.

I think people should stand to include these elements more.

Wow, your Fragmented Disillusionment? Minor Miscalculations was one of the early fanfic stories I ever read. I too wish fimfic would turn genfic soon as most of the stories I follow on fimfic are dead, especially these past few months. These days I have more story updates on fanfiction.net . As for sharing more fiction other than ponies, I say yes.I'm not into tg but am interested in tf mostly of the more physiological in nature, sort of like the kind in a few of your Pokemon stories.

I think if people aren't interested in your Non-Pony work...just release them in two different posts. That way if someone doesn't care about Non-Pony stories, they can easily ignore it. Have the best of both worlds. Sure you might have to make an extra blog post, but that should only take a few minutes extra at most.

I mean I'd be curious what else you write, other then Ponies & a Pokemon fanfic.

If you write in a day job, that actually makes a lot of sense, with how good your quality of writing has been even early on.

Also sorry the comment section for your Gleaming Shield fanfic got overly heated. I only read a few posts in the fights, and I was already done with it all. I already commented my other thoughts on the story itself.
