Rubicon Behind the Scenes Episode 2: Sidestories! · 3:35am Aug 27th, 2020
Hey again, ladies, gents, and fans of an indeterminable nature!
So, thought about what I could ramble on about, and I realized I had a few things I thought you guys might be interested in, that I can talk about without spoiling upcoming chapters, all related to the Rubicon Universe that is developing faster than my happy ass can write it. Seriously, I'm plunking out at least a thousand words a day, sometimes more, and the story is just getting bigger and more expansive, with every conversation my "writing team" and I have in my personal discord for it. (I swear this story is becoming my day job with me being stuck at home because covid.)
First on the list is "Sidestories!" This is an ever growing list of stories I have ideas for that involve other characters or events that happen around, before, or away from the main story, that I want to eventually write, or have ideas for, or even have written some of, that help flesh out the world. Here's what I've got so far:
From Always To Forever: A Rarijack sidestory, one that delves into the history of Rarity and Applejack's relationship, and how it has been seen or perceived by those around them, and this sort of fanciful love story that everyone knows about but never mentions...(Its basically 100% sappy, and 75% Rarity and Applejack's backstories as characters growing up, from the most mismatched pair of best friends, to awkward preteens, to secret girlfriends, to even how they were leading up to, and during Rubicon where we dont see them. Likely to be rated T, but depending on what I cover, it may end up M. Dunno.
Queen of the Dark Web: An origin story for a side character yet to appear in Rubicon. Definitely an M rating on this one, because it delves into some pretty dark aspects of human society.
The College 'Experience': Shining, Cadence, and Luna's college antics, everything from college parties, trauma, hilarious bonding over boffer LARP, SCA events, Renn Faires, exam cram sessions, and some really awkward coming out conversations...and at least one incident involving a plate of brownies that turned out to be more than a little "special." Its a long, but somewhat lighthearted tail of an extremely powerful friendship between three people that really has shaped so much in the background of Rubicon, but will never really be that much in terms of 'front and center.' Probably rated T, because its mostly light college antics.
Dancing on the Sun: A unique dual story that explores the backstory for both Celestias, human and alicorn, their histories, and how they were shaped by their unique life experiences into the powerful females they became on both sides of the mirror. Honestly, I'll probably rate this one as an M, just because of some of the subject matter.
The Great Prank War: Rainbow and Pinkie love playing pranks, and when they get involved pranking each other, it inevitably draws Sunset Shimmer into the mess too. The rest of CHS and their friend-group can only live in constant fear and horror of getting caught in one of the pranks. In the end, who will be the victor, and who will suffer defeat? As it turns out, she who gets the last laugh is the one person no one suspects.
Probably rated T, because for the most part its suggestive and rife with lowbrow humor. High schoolers are high schoolers, magical girls or not.
And This Is Why You Knock...: Shining Armor should have knocked. He really should have. But he didn't, and now he's learned things he never wanted to know about his little sister. Things the universe thinks its funny to remind him of at every turn, much to his horror--and Cadence's eternal amusement. Rating? Oh definitely M for this one, because of the hilarious content.
Memories of the Little Sun: A collection of stories and flashbacks, as told by Sunset, about events of her days as a filly, growing up as the ward of the Princess of the Sun. Days long gone of picnics and storytime, of precious moments when it was just the two of them, to life in the palace, to days at CSGU, to even some of the arguments that spiraled out of control and led to her flight through the mirror, its basically all of the background for Sunset Shimmer, book-ended by two very key moments from the Princess' perspective. This one is probably gonna be either an E rating, though it might sneak into T, because of teenage Sunset being a bit bitchy.
Elemental Charges: An anthology-esque set of tales about the Elements of Harmony and their various Bearers throughout Equestria's history. Likely rated T, for comical violence.
Those are the ones set up for now, but I'm sure more will come as the story gets written and as more conversations are had. I'm also interested to hear what side stories you guys might be interested in reading! So feel free to make suggestions or throw out ideas or questions in the comments, ya know?
With many hugs and much cocoa,

PS-Next episode will probably involve timelines, and what I've ignored/changed from canon. Like fucking Starswirl the Prick.
I want college antics and That's why you Knock because that sounds awesome.

Well, if we readers didn't already know you were ambitious with the world of Rubicon before, we certainly know it now. That's a lot of different backstories you have there.
Those all sound fun.

And This Is Why You Knock... already has the prologue written, and so far, everyone who has read it has laughed until they couldnt breathe, so yeah. Thats gonna be a fun one to unveil.
As for The College ‘Experience’....honestly, besides working on the relationship Sunset and Twilight have, the three person friendship of Cady , Shining, and Luna is probably my next favorite dynamic, a lot of which comes down to Cadence’s bubbly but sincere personality, and the fact that if you buy into “Gamer Luna” that makes her and Shining both huge dorks. And let me tell you, all of the strongest relationships i have started because the other person was also a huge dork, which includes my spouse, the man who is my brother in every way but actual blood, and my amazing, wonderful editor. Besides, i have sooo many plans in the main story for these three, right down to antics that go off at Cadence and Shining’s wedding.

Yup. Still feel like your drug dealer—except im not making money. Makes me wonder if i should put out a tip jar of some kind, lol.

Much to my own chagrin, i dont do anything small, especially with storytelling. I cant manage to keep my ideas short or confined. I blame my second favorite movie for that, because it made me understand that theres always more layers to a story...that each character, no matter how small, or seemingly insignificant has a story of their own, in a vast, ever expanding, neverending story. “For just as he was sharing your adventures, others were sharing his. They were with him when he hid from the boys in the bookstore. They were with him when he took the book with the AURYN symbol on the cover. Theyre even with him...right...now...”

Most of them are. A few are more...gritty, serious, but there are reasons for it.
