Centipede: Close Encounter... · 4:35am Aug 22nd, 2020

So, it's come to my attention that there is a type of "gun" that you can buy (it's legal), which shoots table salt, of all things. I'm not kidding. Basically, it's meant to kill bugs, like houseflies, spiders... centipedes... etc., by propelling the salt at high velocity, like buckshot. Here's a link to it, if you're curious:

So, I ended up getting one for myself, all because of a recent... incident I had. I haven't used it yet, and personally, I hope I might never have to use it (not likely!), because I don't like to harm things; I'm nice, y'know? But... if a spider or something crawls anywhere near me, I will not hesitate to stop the little intruders, or any other sort of insect capable of inflicting potential harm to me.

Anyway, onto the incident itself. One night, several weeks ago, I was in bed, about to fall asleep, and I was really tired. With the way I sleep, I lay facedown, and sort of have my arm tucked underneath the pillow on the side my head is turned toward. Sometimes, my hand goes out from under the back of the pillow.

So that one night, I felt something kind of fuzzy crawling onto my hand, and at first, I just thought it was nothing. I assume I was just asleep and dreaming about it (though now that I think about it, that's a weird way of thinking about it with my sleeping style; once I actually fall asleep, I'm not even aware I'm sleeping, or of anything for that matter). I subtly shifted my other hand over where I felt the fuzzy thing... and I feel it. I was thinking "Wait a minute... is that, like, a feather-thing from my pillow? What is that...?"

Instantly wide-awake, I swiped the thing away from my arm, jumped out of my bed, and switched my bedside lamp on. I said out loud "What was that thing?" It moved. It moved, and I felt it. So, I carefully lifted my pillow away, and lo and behold, there was something on the bedsheet about the size of my thumb, or slightly bigger... yeah, it was a centipede. Specifically, a house centipede. It crawled around on my bed a bit and, well... I never found it again. It got away. Those things are fast.

So... from that night forward, I got into the obsessive, borderline ritualistic habit of checking Every. Square. Inch. of my bedroom, looking for any bugs to dispatch with my salt-gun, before going to sleep. I still think about that centipede to this day.

Yeah, just a story I thought some of you might be interested in... and might make you think about minimizing the possibility of bugs getting into your house.

That's interesting, It kills bugs but when putting sodium in it, it explodes on contact

I hear ya, happened to me once

Kinda. The force of the salt is akin to a shotgun's buckshot/birdshot.

Yeah. Probably happens to everyone at least once. Bugs are pretty bad where I live, depending on what part of the year it is; gotten my share of spider bites and whatnot, even been stung on two separate occasions by scorpions! But that's because I was being a bit impulsive around them; trust me, leave scorpions alone unless you actually have a way to kill them.
