    Thank you all

A little while ago I posted my first fan fiction in 7 years. I won’t lie, I was incredibly nervous about the reception I would get. Mainly because it was the first bit of serious writing I’ve done outside of college assignments or tabletop campaign settings, and so I wasn’t sure if I had what it takes to write a decent story. But thanks to Ice Star for motivating me and helping me out immensely

    MLP G4 Retrospective: Season 1 Episodes 1 & 2 - Friendship is Magic

After taking a long break from MLP, and with the series ending last year, I’ve decided I want to go back and give my thoughts on each episode of FiM, as well as the specials and films for both FiM and Equestria Girls. I’ll try to do 2 episodes in a blog post once or twice a week for consistency. Oh, and these blogs will be assuming you have already seen the episode in question, so there will be

MLP G4 Retrospective: Season 1, Episodes 3 & 4 - The Ticket Master and Applebuck Season · 4:44pm Aug 21st, 2020

We’re back, and this time I’ll be giving my thoughts on the third and fourth episodes of season 1. Despite knowing what happens in these episodes, I don’t actually recall seeing either of these before.

The Ticket Master

I didn’t like this episode very much if I’m being honest. The Mane 5 are kinda dickish and manipulative for completely selfish reasons except maybe Applejack (and only because she wants to use the ticket to the Gala as a way to improve her family’s business and living situation). Rainbow Dash is especially grating in this episode. I suppose it would make sense if they kept to Faust’s vision of them being teenagers, but since they did away with most of Faust’s ideas after Return of Harmony I can’t accept that. Why did Celestia only give two tickets, knowing full well that Purple Smart has 5 friends? That seems less like she forgot and more like she did it intentionally just to stress her pupil out. Also, Spike’s revulsion to “girly” stuff is amusing considering in future episodes the girls make fun of him for being “girly.” I liked the little montage of Twilight and Spike running around Ponyville. It had some pretty good visual gags to make up for the rest of the episode. Something I did notice about this episode is that it established the first season-long arc of the series, that being the Grand Galloping Gala. It’s obviously not as in-depth as the arcs in later seasons, but considering very few animated shows did this at the time it is commendable. Not much else to say really. Definitely not one of the better episodes of season 1.

Applebuck Season

This is the first episode I’ve actually really enjoyed so far! I like the continuity nod to the Apple Family Reunion earlier in episode 1 and using it to justify why the rest of her family can’t help her with the harvest. Something that kinda bothers me though is how ponies seem to own cows despite them being sentient. It has some unfortunate implications. Equestria is either a slave state or has indentured servitude for non-ponies. Besides that, I like how it shows Applejack’s stubbornness, while well-intentioned, doesn’t just affect her negatively but everyone else in Ponyville. Plus the gags with her fucking everything up in a myriad of ways is pretty funny. Also, I think this has the most Big Mac lines until the Sisterhooves Social episode in season 5. Hopefully the rest of this season keeps improving from here on out.

Ticket Master:
I can agree with that, but like any new or rebooted series, the show was having "growing pains". All new ideas start out pretty rough.

Applebuck Season:
This is the episode that woulda got me hooked from Day One. Given that I was raised in a similar manner, it was too relatable. One scene to the next I was just laughing harder and harder with one thought: EEYUP!!!! Unfortunately, it was the only episode to come anywhere close to the reality of running a farm operation. It misses the mark about why farmers usually don't hire in city people these days: people have gotten lazy and disconnected from the demands and rigors of the business.
