Mimic Slime Story: Ch12 · 10:59pm Aug 13th, 2020

Do you feel that? That is destiny in the air. A city is about to face its darkest day, but it has a mighty leader to stand up and fight for it.

Power. I turned the sheaf of paper over in my form's hands to read it again with my accomplice beside me. It was grinning from ear to ear and looked like it had already won over the city. "Are you sure that's what this meeting is for?"

"Their big thing is in a week, and they want to have every priest focused on that. Either they ask us to police all their streets or they have all the cults there to talk to about it—and they won't do that because at least one of the religions hates a respective cult, to say nothing of the Father Of Darkness hating all of them." It started stripping down, removing its clothes piece by piece. "So we get to step up and show them we can handle it. If they want us gone at the end, we offer them our services for free."

That surprised me. "You're going to charge them?"

Unwrapping its corset, my accomplice had a bigger grin than ever on its face.

"You are beyond amazing, Accomplice. Okay, we attend this meeting with all the creatures in the city that can kill me on sight." Standing up, I set the sheaf down and began getting dressed as well. This was for a special meeting so normal cult-finery of cloak, pants, and boots wouldn't do. I walked to the closet and lifted out a silk shirt. "But why not?"

"Is that sarcasm, Tess? Come on! We're taking over the city! Children Of Anarchy will hold eighty-percent of the streets and we'll be collecting payment from all the churches to do it. You know, we could even ask them to help us deal with the less desirable cults once this is all over. I don't doubt we could hold this city by the end of the year." Standing there without a stitch of clothing on, my accomplice was panting with excitement. I knew well how much it had been enjoying this game we played.

"Are you getting dressed?" I asked.

It looked back at me over its shoulder, then slowly turned. I looked at the scar on its forearm and what it'd done. The scare was now edged in black ink that'd been pressed under its skin in a strange ritual that had seen half our cult do the same. "I could probably get away with marching in there like this, but it would cost us our fee."

This was something I could tell it enjoyed. It wouldn't go through with it, but just knowing it could left my accomplice flush with excitement. We both got dressed and left the cult warren to make our way toward the town center.

The entire walk was peaceful. No creature in the city would seek to steal from or assault us. The paladins guarding the center was different, however, and though they kept all the regular people away, they just dipped their heads to my accomplice and me—on the whole a lot better than the things I knew they could do with their enchanted swords and ability to summon a lot of fire.

"Master Talon, Lady Flare, it's good of you to join us here." The creature that spoke was the high priestess of the All Mother. If there was any creature in the city I feared more than paladins, it was this female.

"High Priestess, it is our duty and honor to come when receiving a personal letter from yourself, as it would be for any leader." My accomplice was smooth with its words. I could recognize that while it had accorded the creature its title, my accomplice had also hinted that we would not pay any particular favorites among the churches. "I know you haven't met Talon before, but I thank you for according him well. As you know, our service to the city has increased of late, which has seen him placed under additional pressure."

"Indeed. It would be a surprise to learn otherwise. I even heard there is less riffraff in the city now. Quite commendable." The priestess seemed happy. I was glad of this as it meant today might not be the day I burn to death. "Tell me, Master Talon, have you an inkling of why you were invited tonight?"

Flattery was always best to use with the churches, so I began by bowing my form's head until a normal creature's eyes would not be able to see the priestess. "I leave most of the political workings to my lady, but she took time out of her busy schedule to make sure I understood what might be happening this lovely evening."

"And that would be?"

"That the churches wish to celebrate a grand event that will usher in a new age of wonder. That it would be preferable if paladins and priests weren't needed on each street corner. That there may be a role for even those such as we at such a juncture." My other side, as my accomplice put it, spoke very well to creatures. It had seemed like knowledge and intelligence combined had made this particular task easier.

"My dear Lady Flare, you have yourself a very unique gentleman here." The priestess turned to address my accomplice, leaving me a moment to quickly take stock of the meeting. There were other priests wandering around, but though many looked our way, none intruded by approaching. "Well-trained in both deeds and mind—yes, I believe we have a role for you indeed."

Had I done it? Was my other side's eloquence enough to have swayed the priestess? Regardless, it was still just one of them.

"Perhaps we could discuss what role that might be?" My accomplice's heart had sped up, but its face remained passively happy.

"Yes. Yes I believe we shall." The priestess turned and nodded toward a paladin creature who carried a large stick that stood a little taller than it did.

"Here ye! Here ye! Blessings upon all here, for peace reigns and the gods are with us!" The paladin brought the stick up and down three times, and on the third I felt a rush of magic pour over and past me. It was the same magic as I'd felt in the building that first time, but oddly it did not crush me with agony. "I present Master Talon of Children Of Anarchy and his Lady Flare of same."

"We've just been speaking, and I believe this deal will benefit all of us in this joyous occasion." The priestess gestured toward my accomplice and I. "It will be important that peace is kept in the city and that all our priests have time to pray and celebrate that day, one week hence. While we all understand that reparations for your work would be in order, we believe that there may be a better course of action."

Not constrained by the limited senses of sight of the creatures around me, I watched as my accomplice struggled to hold its expression neutral. I followed enough to understand that we might not be getting paid after all, but there seemed to be more to this.

Another priestess approached us, and I recognized it as the leader of the church of the Father of Darkness. Like with the first priestess, this one had a weight of magic that seemed to radiate off it. Part of me hungered to taste what such creatures' intelligence would yield, but that part was well guarded now by fear. "As our gods have decreed, all hostilities have been set aside for this event, and in the moments we've had to take stock of the city around us, we have seen two of such glorious purpose as to unite and protect our city. With this in mind, we ask you to protect our streets for the foreseeable future, and once our celebration is over, our invigorated purpose will turn toward those cults that still defy your leadership."

The other priests present murmured softly, each of them with soft words of agreement—except one. This wasn't as popular a union as what the two priestesses claimed, I believed, but if it were true and their gods had told them to play nice, they seemed to at least be listening.

"You're giving them control of the city," the dissenting priest said. It stood up and gestured toward my accomplice. "These aren't fit to walk the hallowed streets of our districts let alone police them."

The priestess that worshiped the Dark Father turned its eyes upon the single voice against us. "Orleif, High Priest of the Silver Legion, we understand your desire to control your streets, but hasn't your own deity advised you upon—"

"They only demand obedience and power, you know this, Shade. Their voices are many, and many call for peace in this time. None call for this creature to bring it!" It continued to point at my accomplice.

"What," my accomplice asked, "can we do to assure you that we will guard your streets in accordance with your laws and principles, Grand General Orleif?"

"You are not worthy to use my title or name, commoner! As the Legion marched across fallow fields, they raised their swords to the wheat beyond and called on the justice of eternity. The sheaves were cut down by their lowliness!" In a swift motion the dissenting priest drew its sword and pointed it toward us.

This was it. This was the end. White-hot light flared along its blade and seemed to lunge toward us.

"No," both priestesses said at once. More priests stood and repeated the word until all had moved between my accomplice, myself, and the angry priest.

The priestess of of the Dark Father gestured at the sole creature that had stood against us. "You do not have the mandate of your deity, Orleif. Your magic pales even now with such a simple word to stand against your Litany. Surrender your sword to one who can prove their mandate."

"I have the mandate of the Silver Legion!" A paladin stepped up behind the old priest and drew a blade. "General, you have strayed from your path, but once you are Legion—" All could hear the sound of a knife piercing mail armor.

"… always Legion," the old priest said and closed its eyes.

The female creature drew its dagger from the old priest and stepped back. "Take him to the tombs." Turning its attention back to the priests gathered to protect my accomplice and I, it nodded its head. "The Silver Legion never falters, it only pauses to draw breath. Of course we march to the same drum."

"We didn't get any money, but we will own this city in a month's time. The churches defended us!" My accomplice's eyes blazed not with power of wizardry, but power nonetheless. It was beautiful.

A cheer rang out in the warren, and though it was exciting to hear our cult so pleased, it meant a lot more work for me. Sometimes I wondered if this was a punishment for something I'd done but cannot recall.

Do you feel that? That is destiny in the air.

Are you sure we aren't just downwind of the tanneries?

Blessings upon all here, for peace reigns and the gods are with us!

Note: When someone says "The gods are with us," it is considered the height of rudeness to ask "which ones?" Especially if you worship one who isn't on the list.

... Oh. It's one thing to have the support of those in power. It's quite another to have the support of what seems to be the whole dang pantheon. This ooze is going places.
