A Belated Apology to the Star Wars Fandom (A part of it, anyway) · 5:14pm Aug 6th, 2020
I don't really know what motivated me to write this. I guess I was just thinking about it and figured I oughta' say something.
The Star Wars Sequel Trilogy has split the SW fanbase apart. That is a fact. Me, I don't really think they're the best movies in the world. I remember when the first reviews for Rise of Skywalker came out, I sort of rubbed it in people's faces that it was getting slammed.
That was wrong of me. And I suppose there's my reason for this post.
If there are any of you out there who feel that I have belittled you or made you feel bad for liking the Star Wars sequel trilogy...then I am truly sorry.
The truth is I actually enjoyed The Force Awakens. And in spite of its legion of flaws, I actually find myself enjoying The Last Jedi a bit more since its release. Whether it's because those problems don't bother me as much anymore or if I just want to mentally bury the hatchet, so to speak, I don't know. The only one I still do not enjoy is The Rise of Skywalker. I still find it to be a mess of a movie, and having read Collin Trevorrow's Duel of the Fates script, I think I would have preferred that one, if only for the feeling that it ran with what TLJ was going for. But the first two I can enjoy at least, even if I don't think they're the best.
And as somebody who's been getting sick of all the hatred and toxicity and lack of civility on the Internet–a lot of it over fictitious things when you get down to it–I feel that I would be remiss if I allowed myself, even for a moment, to devolve into the very thing that I advocate against.
So, uh...there, I guess. I'm burying the hatchet on the sequel trilogy. Live and let live.
It's perfectly fine; that water's well beneath the bridge by now, anyway.
For what it's worth, you were far better about it than the blokes calling us subhuman SJW scumbags.
:P
Well said, Jade.
I do think the films have flaws. For example, I felt like Rise of Skywalker was adding too much in too short a time. But people have always thought Star Wars has been shallow since 1977. Every one of the films have flaws, even the original ones. I adore the Prequels, but they have flaws, and big ones. Phantom Menace was mostly about politics. Attack of The Clones had cringy love subplots and very little attacking of Clones. Revenge of the Sith, again, had a lot of stuff in it that was never given much attention to unless you watched The Clone Wars. And there are some things that people really enjoy about the films that others think are flaws, like General Hux. Basically, this is nothing new for Star Wars. It's par for the course, in other words. Don't feel that bad about it.
If I can thumb blogs, this would get a thumbs up from me.

Yeah, they're very much flawed films. Half of the fanbase won't admit to even the original trilogy having flaws, but what can you do? They're mostly fun movies, the lovechildren of Kurosawa and Flash Gordon.
Honestly, I'm of the mind that you should never apologize for your opinions. Accepting your flaws and moving past them, that's fine. But no need to apologize to the whole fanbase in an open letter for how you think.
Nicely said. And much appreciated. I liked Rise of Skywalker, warts and all, and I am beyond sick and tired of the endless sniping over these movies and their fans. It's enough that I've canceled a planned overview of my thoughts on the Disney era, because I just feel like it'd be too much headache to get into it.
