Previously on Who We Become (The Open Road edition)

Figured I'd make a blog post catching people up on WWB if they haven't read it all (or want a refresher) but still want to read The Open Road. This will be linked to in the description, just needed to put it out there to do that. Obviously this involves major spoilers for prior WWB fics

The Open Road could probably be read more or less independently of the rest of Who We Become as long as you take it as a given that certain relationships have already been formed. But still, here's a crash course:

Twilight and Fluttershy had been married for years, stirring up a little controversy for being the first openly gay royal couple. That controversy went up exponentially when they announced they were also adding Sunset to their relationship. Despite polygamy not being recognized in Equestria, the triad decided to hold a secret and non-legally-binding wedding to add Sunset to their marriage. They continue to keep it under wraps as they go on their honeymoon so they can have some peace and quiet.

Meanwhile, Spike and Scootaloo (who are both sixteen by this point) started dating around the time of the wedding. It’s Spike’s first relationship, while Scootaloo has dated a few other boys. The news concerns Rainbow Dash, who had learned that the human Scootaloo is transgender, and is worried that if her Scoots is as well it’ll be better to figure out before they get too into their relationship. After the two talk about it, Scoots tries presenting as masculine with he/him pronouns and finds he really likes it and commits to living as a stallion. Spike supports Scootaloo in this, but ultimately he’s straight and realizes that every step Scootaloo makes towards living as a guy is a step away from Spike being attracted to him. The couple break up but remain good friends.

The fallout from coming out to ponies as well as the drama in Spike’s personal life lead to the idea to get away from it all in this story. That covers the main details you’d need to know to understand this, other details that will come up are that Sunset and human Fluttershy used to date and it ended badly, human Fluttershy tours with Rainbow’s punk band as their manager, and Sunset never got along with her parents and is barely in contact with them these days.
