The skies over Newcanter had never been to the orange-furred mare’s liking. Too many holes for ponies to hide in, too many walls to obstruct her view, and too many ponies in the open to distract her. Her eyes scanned the streets idly, picking out movement in the late twilight hours as ponies went about the remainder of their days. Some of them looked up as she passed them by, only to quickly return to their designated tasks.

She scoffed at them, eyes narrowing. An angered growl sounded from somewhere deep in her throat; the back of her skull burned with barely-contained anger. “Where are you…?” she snarled.

The mare had to be here somewhere. She knew it. She just had to find her, and then… and then…

And then what? What could she do? The one she sought was supposed to be here. She had been welcomed here by those fools in the councils, in spite of everything she had done. In spite of what she had taken!

The pegasus closed her eyes, taking a deep breath to calm herself. Her hoof drifted up to pull open her chest piece, soon finding a shard of amber dangling from a chain around her neck. She gripped it tightly and continued breathing, forcing herself to remember the warmth she had felt when she first received the simple accessory so many years prior.

Her eyes opened as she lifted it up to stare at it. The chain was old and rusted from years without proper maintenance, and the smooth orange gem, shaped like a perfect sphere, contained but a few thin cracks along its surface from some small dings it had taken in the past. The world beyond it was distorted and fractured, shifted in hue to a deep, rich shade of orange.

“...I’ll do something,” she growled softly. “She can’t go without paying for what she’s done…”

Then, as if by the will of The Five themselves, her target came into view through the distorting lens of the amber gem. The pegasus’ eyes widened, and she slowly lowered the old heirloom. Her eyes fell on the mare she had sought since she took to these skies, and her heart swelled with fire and venom she had not felt the likes of in what felt like an eternity.

Her coat bristled and she gave chase, silently gliding over the buildings, careful to keep out of sight. Soon enough, she alighted on a rooftop, perching herself on the edge. She looked down at the mare that trotted beneath her, taking a moment to make sure she had found the right one.

The details were all right: an icy blue coat, battle scars marring her elegant, muscular frame, a cutie mark of three red gems, and, of course, a mane and tail colored an unmistakable shade of Scarlet.

..This a sort of prequel? Newcanter was Scarlet's home at the beginning of the story, right?

Swanrun is her home.

...Ok, I got that wrong, but Newcanter was definitely a city we visited....was it the capital?

Given its name is more or less a modest retooling of 'New Canterlot' ...yeah. It's the capital. XD We spent over ten chapters in that city.

....I never noticed the name was so similar....:facehoof:

Still, begs the question, the hell is Scarlet doing back in Newcanter? And walking freely?
