Some unfortunate news has arisen in England, and it is something that I must share with y'all.
The British hedgehog has been classified as 'vulnerable to extinction'.
Yep, you heard me right. Our spiky-backed, adorable garden critters are now almost all gone. T'is a sad day for us Brits. It always has to be the most adorable animals, hasn't it? According to studies, since 1950 when their numbers were about 30 million, as of 2019-2020, they've dropped drastically to 1 million. How sad is that?
As an animal lover, this is saddening to hear to say the least. My favourite cartoon series and game when I was growing up was Sonic the Hedgehog, so I happen to like them a bit more. I haven't seen an actual hedgehog with my own eyes for years. From childhood to adulthood, I've probably only seen one twice, if that. The last time I saw one, I was in secondary school, and my English teacher, also an animal lover, found it unmoving on the grass outside and took it in. I can't remember what happened exactly, but I think my brother told me it died shortly after. 💔
There was a hedgehog in my grandma's back garden when I was a kid, and we used to take hurt and injured animals in until they got better. We kept it in a box with a warm towel, water and some things to eat. They are adorable critters. I can't believe how fast species of various animals are getting scarce around the world and vanishing before we know it. They are losing their natural habitats around here as population grows and their land where they live gets flattened out for new homes. I legit feel teary-eyed right now. I mean, look at that little face:
Here's hoping they won't completely die out within the next few decades or before the century is out. Hedgehogs are so cute. It's hard to believe hardly a single person alive cares what happens to them around England. I really want to hold one again after hearing this news.
Those are very cute animals.
Awww...
With faces like that, they look like spikey bandicoots.

Status: Endangered.
Not to mention our state fauna emblem, the Numbat.

Status: Critically Endangered.
In fact, they are almost extinct.
You can fit every Numbat roaming free into a British Mini.
So I can understand the sadness with your Hedgehogs.

Never heard of a Numbat before. They look a bit like squirrels crossed with chipmunks. Are they related? And I've never seen bandicoots. Not sure they live in England. They do look like a hedgehog without its spikes. (I hear you can get them as pets! (Hedgehogs, I mean) Hmm, maybe I'll look into it! )
My favourite type of animal is rodents, so it does hurt my heart quite a bit. Ever since I owned guinea pigs and lost mine, I had a deeper love and appreciation for them. They have the most adorable faces on an animal!
I'm glad at least a few select people out there are doing their best to make an effort in saving and preserving them to ensure their survival. If only more people loved animals as much as they do.
