Ask Me Anything Blog: I Lost Track of the Number Edition · 5:28pm Jul 15th, 2020
It's that time again. Ice Star is bored between writing again. Ask me stuff. Story questions, writing questions, and about-the-author questions are all good. Most questions are. Just don't be a dick, I guess.
Plus, there are a lotta not-fun things in people's feeds lately.
Got a PM with someone telling me my author's notes are distracting, and no offense to them if they see this because it's a valid opinion, but it got me wondering on what other people think of them. So on that note, what's your opinion on footnotes/author's notes? Annoying? Entertaining? Just a random place to ramble about the current chapter?
I'm the last one usually. Also just a fun question, but do you have a favorite bug?
Moths are best.1) How many kids have you eaten?
2) What made you pick your username for FimFic?
3) When creating a character, what's the first thing you think of?
4) What motivates you to continue writing horsewords?
5) What is one of the biggest pet peeves you've had on the site overall?
How much planning do you do for your stories? Full on outlines with detailed notes, just winging it and finding out the story on the way, something in between?
And for a silly fun question, favorite Pokémon?
How big is your
dickbook collection? What's your biggest Fimfic pet peeve
Where are my kids?
How do you get into the zone with writing?
Does spider have pusspuss?
Seriously where are my kids I left them with you earlier and now I can't find them anywhere please help me find my son I am crying and shaking rn

I loathe when people don't put author's notes/blog links/whatever in the feature specifically designated for it. Complaining about it is silly. It's such a genuinely helpful feature that doesn't distract from the story or pad it with false word count like on Ao3 or FF.net and people who complain about it for 'aesthetic reasons' or whatever are such snobs.
I actually don't really like bugs. But, I guess rolypoly bugs are okay. They're too inoffensive to bother me or creep me out.

Wouldn't you like to know, weather boy?
I didn't want a generic username or something that looked like a bad gamer tag on Xbox with my favorite pony, Xs, and some numbers thrown in. I was having a hard time coming up with an OC name for what I might call my own pony because two things I like are winter and astronomy motifs. That sorta thing. So, I dug around some old childhood drawings and stuff until I found an old Warrior cats OC. I used the '-star' naming pattern instead of the character's original name, decided it sounded enough like a pony name, and just went with that. It combined the two things I wanted most.
I usually think of their name or what they might do in the story. Not necessarily a cutie mark but a more abstract role. Are they Twilight Sparkle's neighbor? A next-gen pony? A salty minor antagonist? A doctor named Snake Oil? (I actually have written the last one in an upcoming story.) Sometimes I blend a prompt/historical fact/wordplay and generate a pony from that. It works since most ponies have word play names, like in the case of a pony who might be named Snake Oil or Cloud Nine.
I need to empty my brain of horsewords somehow. Not writing is madness. Plus, I'm not commissioning people to write stuff I can write a) for free b) exactly how I want.

The fact that incest/snuff(?)/
foalcon✨simulated child porn✨ subsets of the fandom are so noxiously prominent and established as normalized/acceptable. Also, horrifically easy to find as a minor (I speak from experience here, especially from a couple of accidental trips into derpi before my writing days). Lmao delete that shit. No one should give a flying fuck about "b-but it make my pp hard!!!1111!!1!" or whatever the latest excuse is.5309351
I'm afraid to count. I'm already trying to plot ahead where my fifth full bookshelf and next three bookshelf substitutes are going to be.

That usually depends on the length of the story. Favorable Alignment and Enemy of Mine have had entire discord channels, binders, and loose leaf stacks of paper with notes on ideas and dialogue. The former also had documents with every five chapters ahead of schedule outlined with a paragraph's worth of what was to be included in the story. Enemy of Mine was fully outlined. Shorter stories I can generally get ready in a couple of hours, or just don't really need an outline for. Having established personal lore/headcanon can make future ideas easier to build off of, which reduces planning. If I work on chapters across months or am afraid of forgetting things, I'll leave a couple of greentext-like lines of what is supposed to happen in the next few scenes.
Ponyta + evolution, Eevee + evolutions, Torchic + evolutions, and Suicune are the ones I remember liking most from when I was a kid. Honestly, I'm more amused by the horrible names I give them on Pokemon Go. They're all pretty cool, so I don't usually pick favorites beyond "wow that one is pretty neato" or something similar. I like the meme-y ones too, like the Helix fossil one and Snorelax (I'm a filthy casual fan and can't spell half their names right okay). But honestly and unironically? Probably Magikarp.

I plead the fifth.
Music, coffee, and coming up with flimsy excuses about what I'm in the uni library for. Taking ideas way too seriously. Etc, etc.
You can write the story you want to see in the world.
So, yes. Probably.
The accident was ten years ago, Jack. You ate them and really need to let them go.
This ain't healthy.
Mostly for your intestines.
Please return Jack's kids
Also what's something you'd like to see more of in stories on this site?
5309402
BOY I AIN'T BOUT THE WEATHER. THAT'S JACK'S MOJO!
Mix-ups aside, it's pretty cool that you came up with your username in that way. Never would've expected the Ice part of your name to be based off a Warriors cat OC.
Also:
Yes. I've been feeling that lately.
What's your opinion on crystals?
What’s your favorite genre to read and favorite to write?
Can you point to a story and say “that’s my favorite story on the site?”
Any recommendations for long romance/adventure fics?
If you could force any one author (I always think Fimfiction author when I say that but I guess you can do whatever) to hold an ama session, whose brain would you want to pick the most?

I disagree. French vanilla coffee just tastes better than mocha to me. You're perfectly entitled to your opinion though.

Wellspring is neat. I really would like to know what he feels about writing and the like. I'm also curious about what he would be like offline, given that he is a very creative and enigmatic person from what I can tell. Skirts is always an option, seeing that he's a recluse and just sounds like a cool dude. TheUrbanMoose is semi-retired, but I'd love to hear what inspires them and the ending for their saga. Tundara is someone I don't know much about but is a fantastic writer. Horizon and bookplayer because they are horizon and bookplayer.
There are some totally retired authors I would have liked to talk to. For original authors, that is much harder.

I like to read what I like to write: melancholy, fantasy, romance, mythology, poetry, drama, and dark spooky stuff. The works. One genre that I like that isn't popular in pony is true crime.
Generally, the stories on my page are the best I've gotten to narrowing that down.
Stories I feel all users on the site could benefit from reading.
The top tier of my personal tastes.
5309618
Healing crystals? Meth? Shiny ones?
What kind are we talkin' here?
5309460
A lot of the names in that universe work surprisingly well for ponies, plus it's fairly gender-neutral.
5309416
I have a grand total of zero children. Muggony is also in this triad and y'all aren't questioning him like you are me. Rude.
In order of importance:
1) Luna/Sombra. I would love to see other people's ideas with them. It's not as though I'm in the demanding reader case, I write them and I also have like 12 projects going on at once. I want to see how other people write them. Instead, there's only like one story that comes out with them a year beyond what I write. It's really rough when your favorite ship is so inactive. I love them so much and it breaks my heart. People who write them make me so happy and it's rough seeing 90% of other ships and every porn cliche get a fairly steady flow of fics, or at least good sock from the 'old days' to fall back on.
2) Older fandom style epic high fantasy and intense mythology ideas with the other species/newer canon depictions of them. I stepped watching around season six/seven for the most part, but there's so many people dedicated to these new ideas. I want to see people infusing the old stuff about quests, demigods, the divine, etc etc etc into the hippogriffs, new monsters, or whatever. It's part of why I like your stories a lot; they carry that element. I don't really care for the later canon that much, hence not really writing it and such, but I like reading other people go nuts about their ideas.
3) asexual characters and themes. It's very lonely without them. Mainstream media is hypersexual and alienating. There's rarely any ace characters. I wrote ace characters in my teens before I ever saw any in non-pony fiction. I was an adult when I got to see someone like me in fiction, and that hurts a lot.

The kind harvested by crystal pony slaves.
5309954
I suppose they're expensive.
5309960
Not if you have crystal pony slaves harvest them. Are you the kind of pony who would want crystal pony slaves to harvest crystals for you?
5309962
Nopers.
5309963
cool just checking
Next time.
What are your thoughts on the recent events in Portland?
5314584
What I know about them thus far amounts to about two sentences, so I'm not going to claim I have a well-versed stance on it considering little is supplied in that excuse for information. Also, I don't really do political/specific takes blogs or questions. Especially not on relatively recent events. This is the first time I've ever actually been asked a political question on one, though the rules I previously put on AMAs were 'No NSFW, Non-English, or Invasive Questions'.
5315511
Sorry, new here. I glanced back at some of the older AMAs before posting, but didn't read closely.
I tried leaving an out in this regard by not naming a specific event. Your response is not any of the ones I expected, which is pleasantly surprising.
5315636
Yeah, they were only on my first few (especially when I was a minor before). I should probably put them back on for new people.
how do i make the things work
5315636 extra reply because i'm dumb
I tried to make a guess. Two things came to mind. I went with what I heard is the most recent and likely for someone to be discreet about.
What would you say is your most defining quality?
