I got to Star Goose again! · 4:54am Jul 11th, 2020
This makes me so happy! I haven't played this game since I was a child! (Special thanks to Background Human from Derpibooru for telling me how to slow it down on Dosbox. It ran so fast otherwise it was unplayable.)
Okay, so this is an old Msdos Graphical game that my potato has no trouble handling. The last computer I was able to play this game on had a total of 128 kilobytes of RAM and a huge 512 Megabytes of hard drive space. And here it is online! (Working without my earlier problem. I wasn't running it on Dosbox.)
Okay, back to the game. So this is a top down scrolling shooter, you move with the arrow keys (right and left, you can speed up with up and slow down with down.) Space shoots your gun, N loads and fires your left missile and M does the same for your right missile.
You have four bars to pay attention to while you play.
Fuel: This is what makes you go (amazing! Nobody would have ever guessed.) Now if it runs out you don't die you just move incredibly slowly. This obviously depletes faster if you hold the up arrow.
Ammo: This is your gun ammunition, since it's limited you can't really just rush through the game with the standard Spray and Pray tactic. You need to learn where and when to fire. But there's enough that some Spray and Pray is alright.
Shield: This is your life bar. Once it's gone you can't take another hit. Pretty straight forward.
And there's a bunch of little missile icons. At least you get an exact missile count.
Don't worry too much if you're running low on something. There are tunnels clearly labeled for what they replenish. The tunnel isn't a shooter, it's a pipe where you can move left or right up the side. But you don't stick to where you are and you need to swing back and forth to build up inertia to move higher.
In these tube sections there are these beholder looking things that you have to collect to replenish whatever it is the tunnel provides you with.
The tunnels can be a bit of a trap sometimes, and you get killed the moment you leave. You don't get eased into this notion either. The second tunnel you get to you're better off going to the side and skipping it as a missile launcher is waiting at the exit to blow you up the moment you leave.
Speaking of missiles, those can be replenished at little outposts in the level itself. Just a bit of advice, always make sure you have M and N missiles ready to fire, basically it let's you hold two more missiles that the screen indicates.
The goal of each level is to gather 6 neon eggs, and you have to get these eggs to advance to the next level. If you don't you get dropped right back at the beginning of the level to try again. Fortunately you don't lose the eggs you already got, so don't get too stressed out about it.
Time for a confession: I am terrible at this game. I used to be alright, but I can't get past the second level anymore. So I don't know what all is waiting for you when you play.
Okay, for the graphics. I love them. It's actually really good pixel art that gives you a decent sense of depth. Even the repetitive design of the background tiles doesn't bother me.
I wouldn't mind seeing an improved version of the graphics where it's smooth and really shaded well, but at the same time I still think I'd prefer the pixel art.
This game is a cherished part of my childhood, and I love it. No matter how bad I am at playing it. And since it's abandoned ware you can play it completely free. Please take a moment to play it, if for no other reason than to let me share this bit of my past with you.
Have fun! And if you get a high score feel free to post it and see who here does the best over all.
