July 4th is a time for celebration. We celebrate our Declaration of Independence from an oppressive reign that used to be England. The founding fathers wanted to build a nation where everyone was free to live under a limited government that protected the rights of the individual. That this government would recognize that our rights do not come from man but from nature and nature's creator. For if they come from man then they can be taken away by man. But if they come from nature and nature's creator then government, nor any man, has the authority to take them away.
"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, that whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness."

And those rights are for all, no matter the creed or color. And it should be "self-evident". It doesn't matter what color a person is because we are all God's creation and all deserve the right to worship as they please. The right to have an opinion without the fear of harm or death.

Even the education that I grew up with did a good job of telling the bad and the ugly about the history of this great nation. But never did they tell me about the good. To truly learn from history, we must learn not only the bad and the ugly but the good as well.

I'm not in the military, but my father and my grandfather were. At my grandfather's funeral, after my grandmother received the folded flag, she then handed it to me. That my grandfather wanted me to have it. To remember what it stands for and to defend what it stands for...
