Happy Independance Day! · 6:32am July 4th

Today is the 4th of July, the day that the USA celebrates its birthday and its separation from Great Britain. I wrote about the actual Declaration last year, so this year I will write about another incident from America's storied past.

In 1814, the Royal Navy began its offensive on Baltimore harbour, attacking mainly with rockets and mortars as the vessels could not get their other weapons into range. Both sides fired back and forth, but for all their ferocity, the British were unable to break through and were forced into retreat. Both sides suffered very low casualties in the resulting engagement.

However, it's what happened next that is most important. To signal fellow Americans that they had won the battle, the defenders of Fort McHenry, which had taken the brunt of the fire, raised the Stars and Stripes over the fort. Francis Scott Key, a lawyer on a nearby ship, was so moved by the sight that he commemorated the incident as a poem. I believe most of you know the words;

O say can you see, by the dawn's early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight's last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O'er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rocket's red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave
O'er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

Happy Independance Day, my friends. May we never forget the sacrifices of those who have fought to preserve our freedom.

I can’t believe I forgot that this holiday was coming up.

Either way...

🎆🎇🇺🇸❤️🤍💙Happy 4th, Blue!❤️🤍💙🇺🇸🎇🎆

Happy Independance day to you two, Bezier. How do Changelings mark the holiday?

Heh. I don’t have the foggiest idea.

Happy 4th of July! 🎇🎆

Happy fourth of July for all my American friends!
But I've always wondered why America seems to have the biggest independence day than any other country. Just saying we all have independence days too.

Eh, some countries..

Lockdown is over for you

Happy freedom day!

You know, it often amazes me how few US citizens know the story of their own national anthem, let alone the lyrics. Surprisingly, more immigrant citizens seem to know these things. In the spirit of such, I would like to present my favorite example of this phenomenon, from one of my favorite movies, sung by one of my favorite comedians. Enjoy:

Happy Independence Day!

Aw, it's nothing. Just something that occurred to me.

You do realize that freedom day is another holiday that is separate from 4th of July. Freedom day is what people call South Africa's freedom from apartheid.
Search it up, I ain't lying.

19th June, isn't it?

No, that's Juneteenth, I'm talking about South Africa, the country in Africa.

Happy Independence Day Friend!

Well damn, your right that’s pretty interesting

In 1814 we took a little trip along with Colonel Jackson down the mighty Mississip

You'd missed a letter.

Two actually.
But that was on purpose. The song doesn't use the full name.
