Friendship is Card Games: Kenbucky Roller Derby #2 & #3

We return to the cutthroat world of G5 roller derby, where Sunny’s trying her darndest to prove she’s more than just a casual skater… and has assembled one of the most ragtag teams of misfits this side of the Mighty Ducks in the process. Let’s see how the story’s developed from there.

No, not mine. The Barcast's. The last call is currently under way, and if you want to hear my part in the grand interview lightning round, you can tune in at 4:20 Eastern/1:20 Pacific (about an hour from this posting.)

Yes, 4:20 on 4/20. No, I do not partake. Sorry to disappoint. :derpytongue2:

    Pest List

Just something I whipped together for fun one day, set to a possibly recognizable tune, all intended in good fun. And hey, given that I derived my Fimfic handle from a misremembered detail of the Mikado, it's only appropriate. :derpytongue2:

Friendship is Card Games: d20 Pony, Ch. 9, Pt. 1

Goodness, it’s been almost two years since I last checked in on Trailblazer’s adventures. IDW putting out comics almost as quickly as I could review them will do that, especially given all of the G5 video media coming out concurrently.

    Conflicted Crossroads

I have an interesting dilemma with an upcoming story, and thus I turn to the Fimfic public (or that portion of it that sees these blogs) for its wisdom.

Life Keeps Going On · 11:08pm Jun 28th, 2020

So, having seen the latest installments of Pony Life... it actually gets better. And, yes, deeper.

Not in terms of cohesive world building, mind you. Sugarcube Corner is still the center of the universe, though we do have confirmation that Rarity doesn't live there. Meanwhile, the tech level in this world is definitely higher than the Equestria we're used to, and cats can apparently talk. Non-anthropomorphic ones. That or Abyssinians have as many breeds as Khajiit. Also, they apparently couldn't get Cathy Weseluck, so Tabitha St. Germain is voicing Spike. As if the crush couldn't get any weirder...

Still, Spike exists, which he didn't get to outside of the opening before now. And there are signs of ponies who aren't plot relevant, which is nice; those first two episodes felt downright barren compared to Friendship is Magic's crowds.

The real depth comes in terms of message. Three out of the four episodes thus far have showcased various unhealthy social archetypes in the negative light they deserve. (And that includes intensity; some are more unhealthy than others and get harsher treatment accordingly.) Friendship is Magic focused on the lessons to learn from your friends. Pony Life appears to be more focused on how to learn from your enemies. Certainly a bold strategy. And I think I have enough material to work with for the next Friendship is Card Games.

How do you stay mad at this?

Well that's cool to hear

For those of us who really don't mind spoilers, can you give examples of what you mean?

I'm starting to gain hope that PL won't make me angry like TTG. This is very good news.

Now we just need EqG Life so Sunny gets some spotlight time. Or bring her into PL. I don't care which.

My eyes read "TTG" but my brain said "PowerPuff Girls!"

And I had to wonder why they'd make you mad.

To be fair, the 2016 Powerpuff Girls reboot isn't without its fair share of controversy itself.

I hadn't thought of it that way, but it's a very interesting viewpoint. I do hope Pony Life continues with the good lessons and the cuteness, because I'm enjoying it for both at the moment. Also it does nail some good jokes, at least for me.

Also those title cards, oh my god they are amazing.

What I want most of all: derpicdn.net/img/view/2020/6/18/2377690.png

I think I'll stick to The Owl House as my pony-esque show of choice.

Wow, Rarity's in love with herself. Just like Rainbow, depending on how you choose to interpret the finale.

I just don't get where people like this abomination. It is pretty much TTG with ponies but not even as well written or animated. (Yes that is a very low bar to set).
It just boggles my mind anyone in the herd finds anything redeeming about it.

I... kind of loved that. I'm not sure how to process this information :rainbowderp:

I think it's mainly because it's harmless. If I understand right, this isn't G5. This is more like G4.5, a placeholder to sell toys until the legit G5 is ready to roll. I don't think they'd go the TTG route for the actual new series. I mean, Hasbro saw what success they had with a character driven story that took itself at least a little seriously. Suddenly pulling a 180 and turning into, well...

I think most people see Pony Life as just... a thing happening right now.

How Applejack Got Her Hat Back

5296722
Sure. Just going to put it behind black bars for those who do care.

The one from last week had a lesson that boiled down to "Don't feed the trolls" and is more comprehensively noted as "Don't wrestle with a pig; you'll both get muddy and only the pig will enjoy it." Basically someone who challenged Rainbow Dash to a contest where the loser won, and who was presented as this menacing, diabolical mastermind... up until Dash decided he wasn't worth her time. At that point, he was framed as a much more pathetic figure, desperately trying to get her to care again and keep twisting herself in knots for his amusement.

The first one from this week was a more affectionate jab at both sides of trends: The blind bandwagon jumpers, and the alternative crowd who only care about liking things that aren't popular rather than if those things are actually good. Both got a lighter touch, but both were shown to be foolish in their own way.

And then there was this week's other installment, which was literally Fluttershy realizing she was in a toxic relationship. He wasn't "sassy," he didn't "have a dark sense of humor," he was an inconsiderate asshole who didn't care about anyone else, and he kept buying her affection with trinkets and insincere apologies (and big kitty eyes, because again, talking cat) every time she called him on it. And when she finally did cut him out of her life, he immediately replaced her.

She then sent him into low Earth orbit with the power of sheer cuteness, but this is still Pony Life we're talking about.

I never thought I'd use "subtle" to describe this series, but it's handling some lessons in a less spelled-out way than FiM.

That's a better defense of the show than that BS copy paste someone did recently with "It's not meant for you!" as the reasoning behind why we should like it. I'm still not convinced, but I'm more willing to give it a chance when I get around to having the time to watch an episode.

I'm intrigued, but have not found a site to see any of it. YouTube doesn't have it either, as far as I can tell.

The real problem Pony Life has for me is that it has a hard time competing from my TV time with Bojack and Kipo. :twilightsheepish:

Also it's... very intense. And it wants me to like it SO much. But I mean I'm a dog person so am I really offended by that? :trollestia:

I never thought I'd use "subtle" to describe this series, but it's handling some lessons in a less spelled-out way than FiM.

This is the thing that gives me hope. Because if there's one area where FiM can certainly be outdone it's the conveying of messages. Something I never liked about FiM (and it's particularly bad in the first few seasons imo) is the outright telling of the moral-of-the-week. I get that it's for wee babs, but it feels like the writers didn't have much faith in their own storytelling, or at least not enough to refrain from spoon-feeding the message of a given episode.

So if Pony Life can bring something new to the table, it might be the messaging after all.

...Hm. Interesting. I gave it a try, but in addition to the cohesive worldbuilding thing, it struck me as really fast and high-energy, in a way I didn't care for. Though I didn't take a very large sample before deciding I'd had enough. Hm.
Glad, at least, that you're finding something worthwhile in it, though. :D

I've been able to see episodes linked from EQD; I don't know how long they stay up, but you might be able to try there.

"Also it's... very intense. And it wants me to like it SO much. But I mean I'm a dog person so am I really offended by that? :trollestia:"
Ah, "intense", probably a good word for it. And I'm a cat person myself...

I’ve been able to find it on Dailymotion, the links from EQD only work sometimes for me since I am on mobile.

It vaguely reminds me of a simplified version of Aragorn's work.
