Has anyone noticed that fics that reach this box don't necessarily have to have any kind of quality at all? I've seen stories in this box multiple times that are complete and utter crap, so exactly what are the necessary requirements to end up here? I mean if human in Equestria stories can end up there, I can't imagine quality control standards are all that high...

There's a combination of 'heat' factors. Follower count, views/comments, the rate at which that happens, and a few other tweaks. You can't predict what will do it, and at what level.

Huh, it's an interesting concept to ponder for sure. I mean, sometimes the featured box is full of fics that are so high quality that they don't feel like fanfiction but actual, canon works, and then there are times where the work in there makes me question rather or not there are any quality control standards at all, but it's fun to think on what exactly goes into something reaching that status.
