Writing death · 7:45pm Jun 7th, 2020
When I set out to write 6 romance stories focused on Luna throughout a 1000 year period, I was focused entirely on the characters and the romance.
But, as we tend to find when we write long running stories with immortal characters, I ended up focusing more on Luna's losses. The first death was very difficult, painful, but the second one had so much dread building up to it, especially since I never want to fall into a cycle of constantly having unusually gentle and kind deaths. Death is complex and painful, and portraying every single lover of Luna passing away peacefully of old age simply isn't realistic or creative.
But it really hurts to write, to know that I can't leave them on a happily ever after, that I can't fade to black. Each character will be complete, from introduction to their end.
I've found it cathartic in a way, though, to be able to write characters passing on, and I'm glad that I'm getting better at it.
