We Need to Talk About This · 11:38pm May 29th, 2020

I hate mixing politics with ponies—I come here to take a break from the real world, not have current headlines shoved in my face all over again.

But this needs to be brought up.

I'm sure you've all heard the news about George Floyd by now. George Floyd was murdered by a police officer—another statistic in the long line of African-American men who have been abused and murdered by people who broke an oath to uphold the law. Ever since his murder—to call it otherwise is an insult—I've had this impotent rage curdling in my gut because of my feeling of helplessness. What could I do against a problem as systemic and widespread as this?

But I can do something. I want to one day create a world where racism and the suffering that they cause are minimized, if not eradicated.

This is a link to Campaign Zero, a nonprofit charity dedicated to reducing and eliminating police violence, especially against minorities, through training, legislation, and research. I have made a donation to them in George Floyd's name, and I hope that you can as well. If anyone should understand the value of friendship and peace, it should be us.

If you have seen what I see, if you feel as I do, and if you understand, like I do, that injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere, then please, donate what you can. We can't do anything for George Floyd now. But we can do something for other African-Americans.

applauds This whole thing is sickening and disgusting. But the fact that there is something we can do about it... well, yeah. Despite all the crap going on in the world today, kindness and wisdom does exist as Zero proves. That just warms my heart.

I've seen it all over the news and this was very well said. I hope this justice can be resolved soon.

Thank you for taking a stand, I can never fully understand the pain and suffering that comes with being afraid to step out of your front door each and every day, to fear sending your children to school or church. I don't know if what I feel could be called rage, but if by rage you mean having a rotten icky sick feeling inside that seems to touch every part of your body, then yes I am. I have never liked fights or violence (outside of video games or books/movies) and I do not necessarily condone the blowing up of shops and stores, but I do accept that this racial garbage has gone on far far too long. I just chipped in $20.

I appreciate you voicing your opinion, and agree with you on so many levels. There needs to be some serious thought and reform put into policing, both so these kinds of abuses stop, and so those members of the police who are good are not given a bad name by these incidents.

Having studied psychology, I think one thing all police need to be taught through training is how to deescalate a situation, not just take control of every aspect. That would not only help them stop from going too far in situations like what happened, but help avoid fatal incidents when someone is having a mental health crisis and normal police tactics just make things worse, something that also happens far too frequently.

I'm sure the campaign appreciates your contribution!

As a criminal justice major, I can strongly attest to the need for reformation and training in deescalating situations to avoid the need for violence in the first place. The budding changes that we can see today are encouraging, and I'm hopeful that we see more of those.

What kind of psychology did you take?

Just standard at the moment, but I also studied biochemestry and am going for a masters in applied psychology that will focus on addiction and alcoholism. I plan to one day specialize in depression or a mix of depression and alcoholism via a clinical psychology degree.

That’s awesome. We need more people like you!
