Well, I guess now I can officially put "Award-Winning Writer" on my business cards without getting in trouble with the trading standards people.

Thank you to everyone who read and enjoyed the story; to Secret Moon for organising such a great contest with such well-designed rules; and to all the other participants, who came up with some thoroughly excellent stories! The results thread is a fine place to start, but I think everything that was submitted is worth checking out.
So! Since winning, I've tried to tidy the story up a little, at Secret Moon's specific urging and based on their and Naiad’s comments showing me where things could be tightened or clarified, resulting in an extra 500 words or so of plothole fixes and general patching-up (which I couldn't do before submitting for the contest as I was right up against the 7777-word limit). If you’ve read Away already, hopefully the result of my post-contest meddling is a better story, and I haven't just ruined it! And if you haven’t read it yet, well, I hope you will now. I still think it’s one of my better efforts, and I really hope you like it.
