    The Knife’s Edge

The other day I got a message from ZanarNaryon telling me they had created a TVTropes page for To Serve In Hell. Now, TVTropes can be a dangerous place to start reading, unless you have a few hours to spend getting lost in it. But if you want to check it out, please

Not with a bang, but a whimper

    Hey friends.

I didn’t used to believe in writer’s block as such. I always thought the phenomenon was a manifestation of something else in a person’s life. I also thought the cure for it was just to sit down and write any garbage you can. Editing should never mix with drafting, and if you can get yourself to stop editing, you’ll achieve more and better drafting—which can then be edited.

Ping 2: Live and In Person

Almost exactly 2.5 years ago, my family and I bought tickets to Whinny City Pony Con 2020. Of course there was no such con, at least not in a physical capacity. But good egg that he is, Charlie Worthley (con organizer extraordinaire) has made it effortless to transfer our tickets from that long-ago time to right now, despite all that’s transpired between.

    Ping

    I live.

    Time's gotten away from me.

2020 got weird. My 2021 started with an honest effort to get back to normal. But after I started getting treated for depression, I began to see more and more ways to improve things in my daily and family life that hadn't fit together very well in years. Including some of the core issues that had pointed me in the direction of MLP in the first place.

    Artistic Expression

It's been too long. Things are great. Really, really great. Not so much for writing, but for different modes of expression and life.

The simple question of "How you guys doing?" ain't as prosaic as it used to be.

This is cool, new, and fits the mood

These last couple months of Coronavirus & related precautions have been like visiting a parallel reality. IMO it's not the "darkest timeline" that people joke about, but I sure miss the timeline that we splintered from back in March.

So much for a nice sabbatical!

Things are decent here at Coffee HQ. I can work from home but my wife can't, so juggling kids etc. has been interesting. Most of the rushing around in our family's daily lives is gone, though. We've had the time to clear out TONS of boxes from our house move a couple years ago. Stuff around the house is getting fixed & organized. I wouldn't call things good, but we're vertical, sane, and reasonably safe, which I'm calling a win.

I recently found a "Vinyl Scratch is my Spirit Animal" design on TeePublic that makes me smile. (Source)

My "sabbatical" lasted a month and a half as-such. The lure of the Writeoff got me back on the horse in April. I'm still taking it slow and limiting my commitments, but things are happening, albeit slowly.

I still love Pony and I've got more stories to tell.

Promises have gotten me in trouble. Better to under-promise and over-deliver. However, a couple of fics are actively tugging at my leg, wanting to get born. And monthly-ish releases always made me happy when I could keep up with them. We'll see how that translates to reality, but it's where my head goes when I let it.

Most of what's in the hopper right now are one-shots. At various times I've talked about writing sequels. It's not about glory or clicks, but the simple fact that there's more story to tell. Again: I'm no longer in the business of making promises. There's one in particular that I dare not even speculate about in detail, nor publicly. Not again.

But things are bubbling.

But things are bubbling.

Surely you mean percolating. :raritywink:

Good to hear from you again. Looking forward to seeing what you have in store.

Don’t call me Shirley! :derpytongue2:

Yes of course, I should’ve thought of that! And I hope it will prove to be worthwhile.

Any Discord-y stuff, perhaps?

Actually yes! I have one story that’s in halfway decent shape, and one that’s going to need more work. Plus more ideas... I still greatly enjoy writing him!

He's a lot of fun to write!!! I look forward to anything you may publish that star him, should you decide to.

Definitely get back on the writing horse if you've fallen off. If you have stories to tell, the world needs to hear them. It's been too long, buddy.

Ha, I could tell you a thing or two about "sabbaticals", my vinyl-inclined friend. I've tried getting off the writing wagon a few times for a break, and it always proved no more convincing than whenever Hayao Miyazaki "finally" announced his retirement, yeah I mean it, I'm serious this time, for real you guys...

The only time I stayed away from writing for a good long stretch was that period from mid-2013 to 2015... and that was all entirely unplanned. Didn't even stop me coming up with concepts and story structures in my spare time.

However, a couple of fics are actively tugging at my leg, wanting to get born.

Are they screaming in your ear too? I started a fic a few days ago whilst thinking, Hey, it's only 10k words, I can handle that. And yet here I am, about to hit the 30k mark and the blasted thing's still not finished. Part of me will be relieved just to get the thing done and dusted.

It’s been way too long, man! I’m glad you’re still out there, and I hope things are good in your neck of the woods.

How many farewell tours have KISS and the Scorpions done now? Ozzy was on his second (the first being almost 30 years ago) when his health declined, and since being off the road he’s even managed to record & release another album.

I’m not those guys, obviously. But if we can learn anything from their example, it’s that farewell tours generate a lot of money it ain’t over til it’s over! Especially not when stories are tugging, screaming, or whatever else they might do to grab our attention.

A couple of one shots are pulling at your leg wanting to be born eh? You promise?

Glad to hear that you and the family are alright!

Yep, absolutely. I’m going to drop one yet this month, and I’ve got plans sketched out for quite a while after.
