I played The Room: Tribute · 3:53pm May 15th, 2020
I'm on a bit of a bad movie binge, and this is the second game that brought me to.
This game follows the story of the notoriously bad movie “The Room” recreating scenes and music, even using lines directly from the movie. But there's a lot of weird things the game putts in, like a massive earthquake that isolated this block from the rest of the world. It's mentioned at the beginning and never addressed again.
The story revolves around Johnny and his life just days before his death. (The games starts by showing his grave, so no spoiler there.) He works at the local bank, has a girlfriend named Lisa, a best friend Mark, some weird kid friend/son/stalker/thing Denny, and an annoying soon to be mother-in-law, Claudette.
The game starts with Johnny leaving the bank and the earthquake hitting. Mark drives up, mentions the earthquake then Claudette shows up. She climbs in Mark's car and they drive off leaving you with your first objective. Buy a dress for Lisa. The dress shop is on the next screen so it's easy. The next screen from there is the apartment building Johnny lives in, to the right is Mark's Love Shack (go here first, it's one of many things Johnny wishes he could un-see,) and to the left is Denny's closet/stalker shrine to Lisa.
Now is the time to mention that this game does feature nudity. So if that's a problem for you, don't play it. I wouldn't call the nudity a plus by any means, but it is there.
From here you go to your apartment and the game closely follows the movie with it's important scenes. There's fun little things to do also, and things you should get right away (Your money is effectively infinite so don't worry about it. I tried to run out of money but lost patience.) like a tape recorder. And the game has a bunch of references to other movies.
Take some time to explore and find the fun things hidden in this game. Grab a magical spoon, see things you will wish you hadn't, make a sandwich, say “Hi” to a doggy.
There's two turn based combat sequences in the game, and you can definitely lose them. You need to actually use some strategy.
I will also say that the ending part that you play is AMAZING! Be sure to go out and do everything you can before doing anything else in the apartment. (You'll know what I'm talking about when it happens.)
The people who made this game were dedicated, talented, and funny. They took a hilariously bad movie, and made a fun and genuinely funny game out of it. I had to take a few moments just to stop laughing at a few points in this game.
There's also a special ending if you collect every secret spoon in the game, and they're well hidden so be sure to hunt them down.
Okay, controls are just mouse interaction unless otherwise indicated. It does the job.
The graphics are pixel art, and they're done quite well. But they don't just make pixel versions of the characters, good work went into what they made and their interpretations of the characters show this and add to the hilarity of the game.
The music is digital interpretations of the music from the movie with a remix or two. I loved the battle remix of the theme.
All in all I'd say this game is definitely worth playing. Doubly so if you're a fan of The Room.
