Magisight: Chapter 31 DELAY + Future Works? Whee! + General life ramblings · 4:43pm Mar 28th, 2020

Take a shot.

Meant to post this last night, but I got distracted by Yu-Gi-Oh! like a chump. 31 is in the editing stages still, and it'll be out whenever it's ready, which should be soon(tm). It's very possible the remaining chapters are gonna be awkwardly released, just due to IRL reasons, and things not being helped at all by recent real world events. Everyone involved with Magisight is doing okay, but naturally everyone is also a bit stressed out. I know a number of you (looking at you, iisaw!) are waiting for the story to be fully complete before diving in, so just hang in there a bit longer!

Regardless! Chapter 31 is being edited, and the re-write of 32 will begin sometime tonight or tomorrow. 33 will be the epilogue, so it's very likely going to be a much shorter chapter to finish tying everything up and put a neat little bow on Twilight's head. With any luck, there is a chance that 32 and 33 might be a double release, or 24 hours apart. It would be nice since 33 will be short, but we'll see what happens. Re-writes always end up surprising me!

There is also the chance that Ember and I might go through the first dozen or so chapters and do some more cleanup with them. Something that's been pointed out to me more than once is how much Twilight talks to herself, especially during the earlier chapters of the Amethyst Hollow arc. It's something I justified, because she does it in the show when by herself and is reading or writing, and it feels very much in character for her. However, I may have overdone it a bit, so we might go back and scale it down a tad, since she does a lot more thinking in later chapters. We also might do general grammar/flow cleanup, but nothing plot or lore related will change.

We're almost nearing the end! I want to think everyone who has been here with me on every step of the way. From people in Manechat supporting me and reading the super early drafts of my first few chapters, to people who have just recently joined the story, I cannot thank you all enough. Magisight has primarily been an expression of a myriad of feelings that really started bubbling during S7. Being able to share it with you all has been wonderful, and it makes me so happy to see you all enjoying it.

I've had a lot of fun writing it, but finishing it is, naturally, bittersweet. I'm super excited to finally get my story completed and shared with the world, but it's also been a part of my life for the last two years. It'll be sad to see it go. Two years is a long time to spend writing just one story, and there are times where I felt like I could be doing more. But, I'm also inexperienced. The story wouldn't be near the quality it is without my editor Ember, and my proofreader/ideabouncer Cadenza. I'm eternally grateful for the time they've spent helping me pull this story together.

As for after Magisight? I'll probably take a week or two or three break from writing. I tend to do the bulk of my writing on Sundays (usually 1500-3000 words, depending on how things go), and a lot of times the rest of the week ends up being sparse. I play way too many video games, so I end up just poking at it a tiny bit or going through Ember's edit suggestions. Recent real world events have shaken up my Sunday writing schedule somewhat, as I would frequently go to a restaurant with Cadenza and spend 2-4 hours there mooching off free tea refills, wifi, and power outlets at the tables. Naturally, I can't do this anymore, so I need to re-evaluate my writing schedule and ensure I have motivation not just on Sunday, but more of the week as well!

As for future projects? Well, I've had vague ideas for Magisight 2 brewing up a storm in my head ever since late 2018, before the first chapter of the first story ever went live. Aside from a few bullet point idea lists and a 1.5 page rough scene treatment, I don't have much. I wanted to funnel most of my energy into finishing Magisight first before really committing down to a sequel. I'll probably spend my short hiatus brainstorming and framing ideas. There's also the possibility that it might not be a direct sequel to Magisight and just be another big, standalone adventure, but I love what I've set up so far, and not using it would just be ghastly. Regardless, expect more Twilight adventuring! New lands, even more magic, and oh gosh is that a villain around the corner? I've been finding myself inspired by various fan-made maps of Equestria (and the rest of the world), so I hope to deliver on some epic Twilight-kicking-some-ass-and-being-awesome-with-magic!

I do have a few short stories planned as well. One that I've tossed around in my head for several months now is a short/one-shot that follows Twilight from the Nightmare Moon timeline of the season 5 finale. Problem is, time travel is icky and yucky and falls apart too easily as a storytelling device. I don't dislike it, but I don't like how it crumbles under scrutiny. The key to a good story involving any sort of time travel is consistent rules. That's something I've been struggling to iron out. I could just handwave it as an AU, but that's not the type of story I want to tell. I have a few other small story ideas floating around, but we'll see if anything makes it to paper or not.

I'm also going to catch up on my own reading. I've been very slowly trotting through The Enchanted Library, and have been making it a point to read at least one chapter a day. Naturally, I missed yesterday, so I'm gonna try to make up for that with 2-4 chapters today. It's a wonderful story, and even though I'm not normally one for shipping, the romance is built up in a satisfying way, and the interactions with Twilight and Rarity are just so dang cute. It's also a good learning exercise for myself as a budding writer. I hope to take away a lot form this story. Also on the list is a re-read of The Celestia Code, the story that broke a 15-some year hatred of fanfiction for me. Magisight simply would not exist without The Celestia Code, both in terms of me being swayed over to fanfiction, and having lots of general inspiration come from it. It's been a bit over two years since I read it, and it's high-time for a re-read. Gotta keep the badass-Twi juices flowing for my next story! I've never read the sequels either, so I'll try to add those to the list if time permits.

Anyway this has gone on long enough. Time to get lunch! Thanks again, all of you. You're wonderful. The show may be over, but the world and its characters lives on through us. Not just those who write the fanfics, but stories do need an audience as well. Once again, thank you. Stay safe and healthy in these trying times.

May the stars shine until the end of your journey!
