It grew out of the idea for the power saw (never played Payday, btw). And once there was that idea of someone seeing the team carry out their plans from the other side, well ... I ran with it.

Fair enough. In the game, you can unlock a power saw to use for very similar purposes in your heists in place of the far slower and less reliable drill (though you would have to change out the blades pretty often).
